2:45 p.m.: An inside look at the infield at Kentucky Derby 149

The infield steadily filled in throughout the afternoon. Outfits ranged from casual to elegant even as temperatures rose, with some celebrating the 50th anniversary of Secretariat’s Derby win.

John Cibulski wore a baseball jersey with the famous horse’s name emblazoned on the back. Haley James adorned a towering monument of a hat honoring the racing giant too.

“It is pretty heavy,” James said, struggling to keep her head up under the weight.

Lenny Wolz, a part owner of Mage, was enjoying the infield in the early afternoon.

“You never think you’re gonna have a Derby horse,” he said. Wolz added that after Forte’s scratch, he was feeling optimistic about the big race.

Wolz also said he’s in it for Kentucky Cancer Program, an advocacy group for early detection, following his father’s death from prostate cancer.

Even for those without a horse in the race, the camaraderie within the infield is a vibrant mini ecosystem on its own.

Rob Ruffin, a Memphis native, has made the trek to Churchill Downs and Louisville often on a personal memory lane. His mother and grandparents had roots in St. Matthews.

“The beauty of the infield is it’s slow enough pace that you can make friends,” said Ruffin, who’s been to Derby at least 30 times. “We have common ground here.”

Brock Waynik and Olivia Turner were all smiles after Waynik proposed to Turner at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 5, 2023. The two are from Zebulon, North Carolina, and are at their first Kentucky Derby.

Brock Waynik wondered for weeks what was the right time to propose to his girlfriend, Olivia Turner, after asking her dad, Lee, three weeks ago for her hand in marriage.

Turns out, the right time was Saturday at Churchill Downs, for the family's first Kentucky Derby.

Kee kept the ring in a wood box and brought it with them on the trip from Raleigh, North Carolina.

“I was a nervous wreck walking around with it,” Lee joked.

Brock proposed in front of the racetrack's Barbaro statue, dropping to his right knee and presenting the ring, designed by the same jeweler who'd designed several other of the family's rings, to his girlfriend of nearly four years.

As the reality began to hit her, Olivia fought back tears, as her new fianceé grabbed her left hand.

Forte, the morning-line favorite for Kentucky Derby 149 has scratched.

The Florida Derby winner was taken out of the race about 10 hours before Saturday's 6:57 p.m. post time.

Forte, the 2-year-old champion and winner of five straight races, was set as the 3-1 morning-line favorite following Monday’s draw. The odds were 4-1 as of Saturday morning before his scratch.

Forte is the fifth Kentucky Derby hopeful to scratch in the last three days.

What happens if you bet on a horse that scratches?

As of 10:21 a.m., across the 14 races expected to run this Derby Day, 31 horses have been scratched and three jockey changes have been made, according to Churchill Downs.

So, what happens if you already wagered on a horse that scratches from a race?

If you made a win, place, show, omni, exacta, quinella, trifecta, superfecta or super hi-5 wager and one or more of your horses are scratched from the race, your bet will be refunded, according to Twin Spires.

For those who placed more advanced wagers, including a pick 4, pick 5, pick 6, pick 7, pick 8 or grand slam, in the event of a scratch, you will receive the "post time favorite, providing your wager is live going into the leg from which your horse is scratched," according to Twin Spires.

Doubles wagers and pick 3 bets have different rules in Kentucky than other jurisdictions. In the event your horse scratches in these wagers before the first leg runs, your wager will be refunded. If your wager is still live going into the second or third leg and your horse is scratched, you will receive a consolation payoff if your wager wins the other two legs of races, according to Twin Spires. In these cases, there is no opportunity for betters to automatically receive the post time favorite horse.
