Kentucky Derby undercard preview: Jackie's Warrior back for more, Cox has 2 in Derby City
Jackie’s Warrior, winner in five of his last seven races, returns to Churchill Downs on Saturday, where the 4-year-old colt will face off against the reigning Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner in the $750,000 Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes.
The seven-furlong race is one of six graded stakes races on the Derby Day card leading up to the Run for the Roses.
On Derby Day last year, the Steve Asmussen-trained colt won the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile. After finishing second in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont last June, Jackie’s Warrior won Grade 2 Amsterdam and H. Allen Jerkens Memorial stakes races at Saratoga, then took the Grade 2 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx Racing near Philadelphia last September.
He ran in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and led through the first half-mile, but gave way in the last quarter to finish sixth. In his first race since the Breeders’ Cup, Jackie’s Warrior won the six-furlong Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn, going wire-to-wire in a time of 1:09.09 over a sloppy sealed track.

The 4-year-old filly won her first four starts, all at Woodbine, but she’s yet to win since moving to U.S. tracks in December.
