Kentucky dog stolen 3 years ago found in Michigan, returned to owner

She put the emphasis on “stray.”

A Kentucky dog stolen from her owner three years ago was found 400 miles north in Michigan, local NBC affiliate WOOD reported.

Callie, who belonged to Venes Mosier, disappeared after burglars broke into Mosier’s Hopkinsville, Ky., home in the southwest corner of the state in December 2017, according to WOOD. Two of Mosier’s other dogs were gone as well.

Mosier never gave up on Callie, checking every month to see if anyone had found her, she told WOOD while wearing an “I swear this will be my last dog” t-shirt and surrounded by three other certified good boys.

On Sept. 17, animal control in Cass County, Mich., got a call about a wandering dog near the state’s border with Indiana, WOOD reported. After tailing the dog, they took her back to the office, found a microchip inside her and ran a search.

To their surprise, the search found that it was Callie from Kentucky.

“I have been in the department for over 25 years now," Cass County Animal Control director Richard Butts told WOOD. “This is a first.”

Butts said that Callie in good condition and that someone had been taking care of her between December 2017 and September 2020. Mosier was a little excited when she got the call.

“I was bouncing off the walls," she told the station. “I was in tears.”

Mosier has an autoimmune disease that made it unsafe to travel to Michigan, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, WOOD reported. But an animal rescue group, Many Paws Volunteer Transport Team, drove Callie home to Kentucky for free.

Maybe it’s not a dog-eat-dog world after all.
