Kentucky elections: Important dates to remember in 2024

Every two years, voters select candidates for Congress as well as offices throughout the commonwealth and every four years voters will select their candidate for President of the United States, which will happen in 2024.

If you will be voting in your first national election, or have voted for every president since before Herbert Hoover, here are dates you will want to remember for the 2024 election cycle.

  • May 21: Presidential Primary Election Day

  • Nov. 5: General Election Day

  • Jan. 5: Candidate filing deadline: Last day to file nomination papers for candidates who must run in a primary

  • April 1: Last day for independent, political organization and political group candidates, except candidates for federal office and candidates for mayor or legislative body in cities of the home rule class participating in partisan elections, to file a statement of candidacy form.

  • April 22: Last day to register to vote for the primary.

  • May 7: Online mail-in absentee request portal closes

  • May 14: Last day to apply for a military-overseas ballot

  • May 16-18: In-person absentee voting

  • May 21: Primary Election Day

Dates to remember ahead of the 2024 Kentucky General Election

  • June 4: Candidate filing deadline: last day to file any petition, certificate, statement, or nomination papers that must be filed by the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June preceding the election for the office sought.

  • June 6: Public drawing for ballot position in offices of Secretary of State and county clerks at 2 p.m.

  • June 17: Secretary of State to certify candidates’ names to county clerks

  • Aug. 12: Candidate filing deadline: last day for independent, political organization, or political group candidates to file a petition due to a vacancy occurring after the June filing deadline but less than three months before the election.

  • Sept. 16: Deadline for printing of regular and absentee ballots

  • Sept. 20: Last day for county clerks to transmit absentee ballots to voters who request absentee ballots prior to the printing of the ballots.

  • Sept. 21: Last day for county clerks to transmit absentee ballots to military and overseas voters whose absentee ballot requests are received by that date.

  • Sept. 21: Online mail-in absentee request portal opens. It closes Oct. 22.

  • Oct. 7: Last day to register to vote for the general election.

  • Oct. 25: Last day to file a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate.

  • Oct. 29: Last day to apply for a military-overseas ballot.

  • Oct. 31-Nov. 2: In-person absentee voting

  • Nov. 5: General Election
