Kentucky Fried Chicken's Chizza is out. We tried it for you

It's finally here! After rave reviews around the globe, Chizza finally made it to the United States.

Kentucky Fried Chicken launched its pizza-fried chicken mashup Monday across the country.

While the new item is there, many people will wonder if it's worth trying or if you should just play it safe and order a three-piece combo or a chicken tenders combo. Even when I ordered it, the woman at the drive-thru gave me a "what the hell is wrong with you?" look.

So, we tried Chizza to help you decide if it's worthwhile to order.

What is Chizza at KFC?

The Chizza (pronounced cheet-za) is two white meat Extra Crispy fried chicken filets topped with zesty marinara sauce, melty mozzarella cheese and crispy pepperoni.

According to a news release, Chizza first debuted on KFC menus in the Philippines in 2015 and since then the KFC exclusive has made its way around the world to Korea, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Germany, Spain and Mexico, among other countries.

How does Chizza taste?

Yes, KFC is a chicken place trying to bring a pizza item to the menu. However, abandon any thought that this is pizza or anything like it. It's not.

If you look past the pepperoni decorating the chicken breast filets, what you actually have here is KFC's version of chicken parmesan. And, as fast-food chicken parm, it's not bad.

The Extra Crispy fried chicken breading does lose some, if not all, of its crunch from the marinara sauce. However, that's OK because the chicken still retains the herbs and spices giving you the distinct KFC flavor.

The marinara isn't overpowering, causing the flavor of the fried chicken to be prominent. The pepperoni adds a nice smokey flavor. The cheese gets lost in the shuffle, but there are enough flavors to make it work well.

This isn't the chicken parm you'd find in a fine Italian restaurant, but it's still pretty good and worth a shot.

Does KFC have a Chizza combo?

Chizza comes in two sizes – small and regular. The regular comes in a combo meal with a beverage and one side and costs around $14.

If you're looking for a good side to go with Chizza, I would recommend green beans or a vegetable. Potatoes seem like too much and coleslaw, always a solid choice, probably won't fare well when eaten in unison. I waited to eat my slaw until I finished the Chizza and had some soda to wash it down.

Is a Chizza good car food?

Would you eat chicken Parmesan while driving? While KFC does cut the filet up into small pieces – like pizza – it's messy and not conducive to eating while driving a car.

If you're driving and get KFC, get a sandwich, tenders or another combo, don't eat a Chizza.
