Kentucky high school teacher of the year removed from classroom instruction, district says

An instructor recently named Kentucky’s 2024 High School Teacher of the Year has been reassigned to non-instructional duties in Jefferson County Public Schools, district spokesman Mark Hebert told the Herald-Leader Wednesday.

Hebert said he could provide no other information about Kumar Rashad.

Rashad, the 2024 High School Teacher of the Year, is a mathematics teacher at Breckinridge Metropolitan High School in Jefferson County, Kentucky Department of Education officials said when he won the award in September.

He is also a member of the Louisville Metro Council, and is running to be vice-president of the Jefferson County Teachers Association.

Rashad declined to comment to several Louisville media outlets Tuesday night including the Courier Journal.

KDE officials did not immediately comment.

According to Rashad’s LinkedIn account, he worked in the Herald-Leader’s advertising department from 1998 to 2000.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
