Kentucky man’s unique sales pitch for Mom’s yard sale goes viral: ‘Everyone needs to wipe’

Will Haydon was worried his parents hadn’t done enough to advertise their Saturday yard sale in Mt. Sterling.

Haydon, hopped on Mom, Tammy Kelly Haydon’s, Facebook Live and gave a brief, colorful and hilarious run down of various items his family was trying to sell at their Montgomery County home.

Haydon’s color commentary was so popular he opted to make a TikTok of it.

It went viral. As of 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Haydon’s video had amassed more than 1.4 million views. His TikTok followers jumped from a little more than 200 to more than 4,000.

It was all ad libbed, Haydon said. “Some of the stuff, I hadn’t looked at before I started talking about it.”

‘Everyone needs to wipe’

Here’s Haydon’s description of some of his parent’s yard sale items:

“Right here we have a weight bench. So if there’s someone in your life that needs to start working out — this is a good way to let them know.”

The stand-alone toilet paper roll holder should appeal to all potential buyers. “Everyone needs to wipe,” he said.

The expandable, flexible goose-neck lamp also has multiple uses: “You can perform surgery or read a book.”

“I don’t know about you, but I love a plate with flowers on it,” Haydon said holding up one of several floral-patterned plates for sale. “Keeps the food down better.”

That old-school wedding cake topper? It’s also useful.

“If you’re getting married in the 90s” Haydon quipped through giggles. “I would buy a Wal-Mart cake and put that on it.”

‘Like being rich in Monopoly money’

Haydon, who works as an aide to Lexington-Fayette Urban County Councilwoman Brenda Monarrez, said the response to the video has been overwhelmingly positive.

People loved his descriptions.

During the Facebook Live one of his mom’s friends, Lisa, inquired about a pair of Adirondack chairs featured in the video.

“A lot of people wanted to know if Lisa got her chairs,” Haydon said. “She did.”

Haydon said he’s grateful so many people were tickled by his yard sale video.

“So many people said, ‘Thank you for this laugh, I needed it,’” Haydon said. “It’s nice to know you brought joy to someone’s life who needed it.”

Haydn said he’s not putting too much stock in the video’s popularity or his new Internet fame.

“It’s like being rich in Monopoly money,” Haydon said. “Feels great, means nothing.”

How did the yard sale go?

Haydon said most things sold. Things that did not were taken to Goodwill.

The cake topper, for example, was donated to Goodwill.

But Haydon soon had donor’s remorse. He went back and purchased it. It was his parents’ cake topper.

They, in fact, got married in the 1990s, he said. He decided they may want it in future years.

“I may make another video using it,” he said.
