Kentucky restaurant makes Yelp’s 100 most romantic spots for Valentine’s Day in US
A Louisville steakhouse known for being the birthplace of the popular and historic J.T.S. Brown bourbon brand has been named by Yelp as one of the most romantic restaurants across the country for Valentine’s Day.
As part of its curated collection of the top 100 romantic restaurants nationwide, released Jan. 31, the customer review site featured Repeal Oak Fired Steakhouse at No. 100 on the list.
Repeal was the only Kentucky restaurant featured in the list by Yelp. As part of its methodology, the website said it looked at restaurants with high concentrations of customer reviews mentioning words and phrases such as “romantic,” “date night” and “valentine.”
Today, Repeal is known for being the only authentic oak-fired steakhouse located on Louisville’s Whiskey Row. However, it’s also the former site of J.T.S. Brown and Sons’ wholesale, warehouse and bottling operation. J.T.S. Brown bourbon is currently produced by Heaven Hill Distillery, but it got its start in 1870 on Whiskey Row.

The restaurant has more than 400 Yelp reviews with the majority being five- or four-star reviews. Recent reviewers describe its atmosphere as “dark and cozy” with a “lovely setting” perfect for date nights.
“It’s a perfect place for a first date or an anniversary,” one reviewer wrote in September. “It’s a wonderful place to people watch as there are plenty of bachelor parties and dates going on.”

Repeal advertises itself as a tribute to the end of the Prohibition era. On its website, the restaurant describes itself as “housed in the former site of J.T.S. Brown and Sons’ wholesale warehouse and bottling operations. It’s where the family welled up with pride as their labels became staples in barrooms all over the country. It’s where they fought back tears as Prohibition took everything away. It’s where they soldiered on towards Repeal.”
The restaurant’s menu features a variety of steaks and seafood cooked over the flames of reclaimed oak-aged barrels. Reviewers often recommend the bone marrow, hot stone wagyu and spicy tuna tartare appetizers.
Repeal is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Breakfast is severed from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Dinner is served from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Brunch is from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The restaurant is located at 101 West Main St. in Louisville, and reservations can be made on online.
