Kentucky voter guide 2023: Michael Bowman vs. Mark Metcalf for treasurer

Michael Bowman and Mark Metcalf are competing to be Kentucky's state treasurer, one of six statewide offices on the ballot in the Nov. 7 general election.

Kentucky's state treasurer is a constitutional officer who acts as the commonwealth's chief elected fiscal officer, with duties including handling the state's revenue deposits and unclaimed property fund.

What professional experience on your resume makes you the best candidate for this office?

It’s been nearly 40 years since we’ve elected a treasurer with any professional training or formal education in finance, my time as a bank officer coupled with my extensive local and state government experience makes me the only candidate with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the treasurer’s office and how would you tackle that challenge?

With the General Assembly’s recent moves to shield more and more information regarding their work from the view of the public, it will be paramount to have a treasurer that is committed to ensuring transparency at all levels and guaranteeing that the people of the Commonwealth have access to information about what is happening in their government.

How do you feel you could help move Kentucky forward in the treasurer’s office?

By being a leader in developing innovative ideas that can save us money, being a good partner with the Governor in driving our economic growth, ensuring competent and principled management of our tax dollars, and expanding financial literacy learning across the Commonwealth.
