Kentucky woman shot Uber driver she believed was kidnapping her to Mexico, police say

A Kentucky woman accused of shooting an El Paso Uber driver was arrested and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a second-degree Felony.

The shooting took place about 2:20 p.m. Friday on U.S. 54 southbound in South-Central El Paso near the Bridge of the Americas international crossing, El Paso Police Department officials said in a news release.

Police said in the release that Daniel Piedra Garcia, 52, was driving Phoebe Copas, 48, of Tompkinsville, Kentucky, from the West Side to a destination in El Paso’s Mission Valley when at some point Copas thought she was being taken into Mexico and shot Piedra, who was critically injured.

The driver was critically wounded and was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment. News reports and a Gofundme set up for the family state that he was subsequently taken off life support.

Copas was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Saturday on a $1 million bond. Jail records show she still was being held that afternoon.

Police said the investigation did not support that a kidnapping was taking place or that Piedra was veering from Copas' destination.

U.S. 54 South at Paisano Drive was closed to traffic during the investigation.

Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Unit and investigators from the Criminalistics Unit responded to the scene.

Police said the investigation continues and no other details were available.
