Kentwood residents grateful for help, partial restoration of water

KENTWOOD, La. (WGNO) — Kentwood, a town known for its water, had gone without for two days.

“There’s nothing wrong with our drinking water. What’s wrong is a malfunction with our water well. That water well, which was installed 7.5 years ago, is having a malfunction problem,” said Mayor Irma Gordon.

Households in Kentwood have had their water restored after losing it on Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to well malfunctions but remain under a boil water advisory.

Gordon went live on Facebook on Wednesday, Jan. 17 to announce the water outage to residents.

“Wednesday night, it had dropped severely, it had dropped so we knew we were gonna be out of water. So we wanted to alert our citizens,” said Gordon.

Nine schools closed in Tangipahoa Parish due to low water pressure

Gordon says one well is now back online and crews are working to get the others back up and running. In the meantime, customers can expect low water pressure.

People are welcome to visit City Hall to pick up fresh water.

“They just brought water, anything we need, whatever we need, how much water we need is what they said. But people need to understand to this this water was already stocked at Kentwood Springs because they didn’t have water either,” said Gordon.

Some residents say they are grateful for the help of Kentwood Water and Tangipahoa Parish.

“It feels good we had help. Someone thought about us because, in a small town like this, we don’t have that much. As many resources as we can have,” said a Kentwood resident.

With another hard freeze on the way, Gordon says it’s crucial residents drip their water.

“All of us will have household water if you don’t run that water wide open. Please drip your water. If you drop your water, we will continue to have the pressure that we have,” said Gordon.
