Kernel girls win fifth straight dual with sweep of Sioux Falls Washington

Sep. 8—MITCHELL — An earlier start time was just fine on Thursday for the Mitchell High School girls tennis team in a 9-0 sweep of Sioux Falls Washington in a dual at Hitchcock Park.

It was Mitchell's fifth straight victory in dual competition, with this contest moved up seven hours to a 9 a.m. morning start due to the hot weather conditions in South Dakota.

The Kernels' Amber Moller won her No. 1 singles match over Washington's Kara Gary by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Delaney Degen (No. 2), Carsyn Weich (No. 3) and Ireland Blindauer (No. 5) each won singles matches against their Washington opponents by 6-0, 6-1 scores. Weich has improved a team-best 14-1 in singles matches with the victory, while Degen is 12-3.

Maddie Childs won at No. 6 singles 6-2 and 6-1 over Madison Gillette, and Elly Clement won at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Grace Fromknecht.

At doubles, Moller and Degen had a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kara Gary and /Madelyn Dahlmeier at the No. 1 flight, and Weich and Megan Mastel earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Zoriah VanDeVendel and Grace Fromknecht at No. 2 doubles. Clement and Mia Larson had a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles to close out the scoring in Mitchell's favor. Washington dropped to 2-8 on the season.

Mitchell (12-3) will now face Yankton and Sioux Falls Lincoln on Tuesday, Sept. 13, starting at noon at Hitchcock Park. Yankton defeated Mitchell, 5-4, last weekend in Huron, while it will be Mitchell's first meeting with the perennial powerhouse Patriots (5-2).
