Kettle Moraine girls basketball coach Todd Hansen resigned this week after being cited by the City of Brookfield Police Department for solicitation of prostitution.

The City of Brookfield Police Department’s Special Investigations Division conducted an undercover operation on March 28, 2023, that resulted in citations to five people for solicitation of prostitution, according to a department statement.

“One of those individuals who received a citation was identified as Mr. Todd Hansen, the girl’s basketball coach at Kettle Moraine High School,” the statement said in part.

According to a City of Brookfield Police Department report:

Hansen was arrested at an unnamed hotel in Brookfield on March 28. Text messages included in the report from a phone number known to be linked to Hansen indicate an arrangement that began in response to an ad placed by undercover officers on a website “known to be used by prostitutes to advertise their services.”

On March 28, the undercover officer reached out to Hansen, identifying herself as the woman from the ad, asking if he was “Still interested?” Hansen replied asking for rates.

The messages continued as the undercover officer provided the unnamed hotel and room number, where another officer was waiting in the bathroom to arrest Hansen.

During the text exchanges leading up to the arrest, Hansen asked if the undercover officer was willing to engage in multiple sexual acts. He also requested a photo of the undercover officer, who identified herself to Hansen as “Crystal,” which she provided in the form of a selfie with her face concealed.

At 1:53 p.m., Hansen texted “Here,” to which the undercover officer responded with a room number and “Name so I know when u knock?”

“Dan,” was the reply from Hansen.

“There is a cop in the lobby,” Hansen texted at 2:10 p.m., to which the undercover officer replied, “Well they aren’t here for me.”

“Make me nervous to come up,” Hansen replied.

“Just come on up don’t act weird,” the officer responded.

“You’re not a cop?” Hansen texted back.

“No not the law I promise,” the officer responded.

After an “Ok,” and one more clarification from the officer to Hansen on whether he was coming up, Hansen arrived at the hotel room at 2:15 p.m. After being let in by the undercover officer, the two sat on the bed, where Hansen began to remove his shoe to retrieve cash from his sock. The undercover officer then indicated to the other waiting in the bathroom to enter the bedroom and arrest Hansen.

Hansen was then taken to the City of Brookfield Police Department, where he was booked and cited under Brookfield’s prostitution ordinance. He received a bond of $2,581, and was released with a non-mandatory court appearance April 24.

Kettle Moraine School District earlier said Hansen's resignation due to 'personal reasons'

A news release from the Kettle Moraine School District on Friday cited an investigation when clarifying Hansen’s affiliation as a former employee of the district.

“The Kettle Moraine School District recently became aware of an investigation of a former employee, Mr. Todd Hansen,” the district release said. “The district had no prior knowledge or concerns with Mr. Hansen’s employment in advance of these allegations. Mr. Hansen no longer works in the Kettle Moraine School District.”

When asked for further clarification on when the district became aware of the citation, Kettle Moraine School District director of public information Sara Otto said: "This incident took place during our spring break. Mr. Hansen resigned for personal reasons shortly afterward."

Hansen, who also had served as a paraprofessional in the district, recently led the Lasers girls to their second-consecutive WIAA Division 1 state championship. He was hired in July 2018.

In a statement shared with Kettle Moraine girls basketball families this week, high school athletic director Ryan Tomczyk said Hansen’s resignation from both coaching and educational support staff roles was due to “personal reasons.”

“Coach Hansen solidified KM girls basketball as one of the premier programs in the state,” the statement said, “with back-to-back state championships. These athletic successes will have a lasting impact on the program.

“We are currently meeting with our high school coaching staff, the KM Girls Basketball Youth Club board members, and high school players, as we actively search for our next girls basketball head coach.”

Multiple attempts to contact Hansen went unanswered Friday. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also reached out to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, and were informed that Hansen also resigned as president of their executive board.

“He no longer is associated with the WBCA,” said WBCA executive director Jerry Petitgoue.

Hansen led the Lasers to four regional titles, three sectional finals and two state titles in five seasons. Prior to that, the former Pewaukee girls coach led the Pirates to five conference titles and five regional championships before departing his post as coach in March 2018 after 14 seasons at the helm.

Hansen's resignation comes after school parted ways with boys coach Trevon Hughes

Hansen’s resignation marks the second coaching departure this month for Kettle Moraine, with former Wisconsin Badgers guard Trevon Hughes departing as boys basketball coach eight days prior. Otto clarified the incidents were unrelated beyond their timing.

"There is absolutely no correlation, aside from sharing a 'news cycle,' between Mr. Hansen's resignation and the resignation of Mr. Hughes. Coach Hughes resigned prior to any investigation and we do not want his reputation tarnished by unwarranted speculation," Otto said.

Hughes said the move came with “great sadness” and was “not something I had anticipated” in a Facebook post after leading the Lasers to their first boys basketball state tournament appearance in school history last month.

Editor's note: Todd Hansen was a former part-time employee of the Journal Sentinel in the late 1990s.
