Kevin for cats, Junior for dogs: Check out the top, trending names for Milwaukee pets in 2022

If your pet's name is Charlie or Luna, you're in good company. Those are the most popular dog and cat names for pets in Milwaukee, according to Rover, an online pet care marketplace that created an end-of-year report of trending and popular pet names.

In Milwaukee, Charlie outranked both No. 1 nationwide male pet names, which are Max for dogs and Oliver for cats. Luna was the most popular female pet name nationwide, beating Bella, which held the top spot for nine years.

Milwaukee's top pet names were:

  • Male dog names: Charlie, Buddy, Louie, Remi, Max

  • Female dog names: Luna, Bella, Lucy, Daisy, Coco

  • Male cat names: Charlie, Max, Milo, Jack, Kevin

  • Female cat names: Luna, Bella, Olive, Lily, Lilah

The report, which has 10 years of data, also recorded the top trending names.

In Milwaukee Junior was trending up for dogs by 673%, and Kevin for cats, up by 647%.

Movies and television shows were a big motivator for pet names.

Apparently, Milwaukee does talk about Bruno. That name for dogs has increased by 40% following the 2021 debut of Disney's "Encanto," which included the hit song "We don't talk about Bruno." Nationwide, pets named after "Encanto's" main character, Mirabel, were up 1,485% for dogs and 932% for cats.

"Stranger Things" character Murray, who was introduced in the second season and was a main character in 2022's fifth season, might have inspired Milwaukee's top trending dog name. Or maybe residents of Milwaukee got the idea from Murray Avenue or Murray Hill neighborhood.

HBO's Gen Z drama "Euphoria" inspired the No. 1 trending dog name nationwide for 2022, Fezco, which was up 3,714%.

Milwaukee stars might be inspiring names as well. Naming pets Jaida was up 47% nationwide, which Rover attributes to Milwaukee's Jaida Essence Hall, who won season 12 of "RuPaul's Drag Race."

Naming pets after food was another trend in Milwaukee. Up in the last decade were the names Pumpkin (374%), Basil (273%), Biscotti (173%) and Chickpea (172%).

Nationwide, the top-trending food-inspired names include Hotpot (1,085%), Sashimi (785%), Pastrami (485%) and Calzone (485%) for dogs, and Roll (182%) for cats.
