How Kevin Costner Built a $250 Million Net Worth Over His 40-Year Career

From Prevention

Kevin Costner has been gracing big screens with his presence for nearly 40 years, and thankfully, doesn’t appear to have any intentions of depriving us of that presence anytime soon. From his first film Sizzle Beach, released in 1981, to his latest television project Yellowstone, Costner has remained one of the most employable and popular actors in the industry over his expansive career. It comes as little surprise, then, that Costner has amassed quite an impressive net worth over the course of his lifetime; the actor is estimated to have $250 million to his name. But it’s not just in film or entertainment that Costner has made a name (and a few dollars) for himself. Here’s a look at Kevin Costner’s success over the years.

Film and television

Having appeared in around 60 motion pictures (and directed or produced more), Kevin Costner’s many talents in the world of film has certainly helped add to his bank account. Field of Dreams, one of Costner’s earlier successes, was a surprise hit, raking in $84 million worldwide. Dances with Wolves, in which Costner is credited both as the director and lead actor, made $424 million around the globe. Yellowstone, Costner’s most recent project, reportedly earns the actor $500,000 per episode.

Musical ventures

In 2007, Kevin Costner officially formed the band Kevin Costner & Modern West, kicking off a worldwide tour in October. The group has seen quite a bit of success, releasing four studio albums and headlining various music festivals, including the Malibu Guitar festival. Between 2009 and 2012, the band completed a few more European tours, and while an album has not been released since 2012, the band remains a passion project for Costner.

Sports ventures

Baseball figures prominently not only in Costner’s professional life (many of his films revolve around the sport), but also his personal life. The actor was once a partial owner of independent baseball team Lake County Fielders in the Illinois town of Zion. The team, part of the North American League, ultimately disbanded in 2012, three years after its founding.

Business ventures

Whereas most celebrity business ventures tend to remain within the entertainment realm, Costner has branched far outside the norm in his interests. In 1995, the actor spent $24 million purchasing Ocean Therapy Solutions from the U.S. government, a company specializing in water purification technologies used during oil spills. The purchase proved to be a very prudent investment—during the infamous Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010, British Petroleum ultimately engaged Ocean Therapy Solutions’ services to the tune of $52 million for cleanup efforts.

Costner has testified in front of Congress about his interest in water sciences; at a hearing in 2010, the actor said, "I come before you as a discouraged U.S. citizen and an entrepreneur with a partial solution to the tragedy unfolding in the Gulf. Seventeen years ago I purchased a licensed patent for a centrifugal force oil-water separator from the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory. Today that technology is the most effective and efficient tool for cleaning up oil spills that you've probably never heard of.”

In addition to this company, Costner has co-founded WestPac Resources to improve upon existing centrifuge technology to separate oil from water, and also owns Costner Industries, which focuses on the same scientific problem.

Casinos

For decades, Costner also owned a casino in Deadwood, South Dakota called Midnight Star. The gambling locale paid homage to Costner’s western film, Silverado, and even boasted a small collection of the actor/owner’s memorabilia and costumes from the film. The casino was estimated to be worth between $3.1 million and $6.2 million. Costner ultimately closed the casino in 2017, though it has recently reopened under new management.
