Breakfast with the Chicago Blackhawks begins at 11:30 a.m. Sunday with a nationally televised game against the Detroit Red Wings in a battle of rebuilds.

In an early morning teleconference, an unshaven coach Jeremy Colliton announced rookie Kevin Lankinen will get his third straight start in goal after a stellar performance Friday in the Hawks’ 4-1 win over the Wings — their first win of the 2021 season.

The Hawks’ goaltender competition between Malcom Subban, Collin Delia and Lankinen has seen mixed results. Subban got the first crack and was ineffective in the opener in Tampa Bay. Delia was only slightly better in the next two losses, allowing 10 goals.

Lankinen played well in the overtime loss to the Florida Panthers before a near flawless, 30-save performance against the Red Wings, his first career victory.

Juggling three goalies and trying to evaluate them without everyone getting equal playing time won’t be easy for Colliton.

“It’s something for the most part we’ll handle day to day,” he said of the scheduling. “Their performance for the most part will dictate who gets more or less (playing time). We do want to look at all three. All three have played. But you’ll probably see all three again.

“At the same time, if one or them or two of them show a higher level and separate themselves, I can see them getting more.”

So is Lankinen the guy for now?

“He’s the guy for today,” Colliton replied.

Carl Soderberg also will make his Hawks debut, replacing Lucas Wallmark, after the veteran forward was a late arrival in camp due to visa issues and had to go through a mandatory quarantine process.

“With the quarantine, he had a stretch where he wasn’t skating,” Colliton said. “But he was skating regularly in Malmo (Sweden), so that’s a positive and hopefully that will help him get up to NHL speed as quickly as possible. But he’s a pro, he knows how to play. He’s a big body centerman whose habits are really good away from the puck.

“He goes to dirty areas and wins puck battles and he has some skill, so we think he can help us in a lot of different areas.”

The Red Wings have been hit hard by COVID-19, with Robby Fabbri, Filip Zadina, Sam Gagner, Jon Merrill and Adam Erne all sidelined.

“It’s hard to believe you can do more due diligence and be more aware of the situation than we have been and it still finds a way into five guys, and possibly more when you talk about contact tracing,” Wings star Bobby Ryan told the Detroit Free Press. “We have done an incredible job of buying into what is in front of us.

“When you can’t ice a full roster and you are looking at guys jumping in, it changes things. It’s a minor inconvenience the rest of the stuff, but that’s the NHL this year.”
