House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy effectively endorsed same-sex marriage on Thursday when asked if his position on the issue has changed.

"Look — same-sex marriage is the law of the land, and it's what America holds, and that's the law of the land,” McCarthy said. “I support the law of the land. I don’t see how that’s different. I don’t see how that’s news.”

The top House Republican’s position was questioned after Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said in a Sunday 60 Minutes interview that she regretted previously opposing same-sex marriage.

Cheney, who Republicans earlier this year kicked out of her House leadership position over her vocal criticism of former President Donald Trump, is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and has a lesbian sister.

“I was wrong. I was wrong," Cheney said. “It’s a very personal issue and very personal for my family. I believe that my dad was right, and my sister and I have had that conversation ... Freedom means freedom for everybody.”

McCarthy, the top Republican in the House and a California congressman, previously worked in favor of defining same-sex marriage as between a man and a woman. In 2016, he also helped Republicans defeat legislation that would prohibit federal contractors from discriminating against gay and lesbian employees.

In 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that state laws and policies prohibiting same-sex marriage were unconstitutional.

Public support for same-sex marriage hit a record high of 70% this year, a Gallup poll found. For the first time, a majority of Republicans, 55%, said that they supported same-sex marriage, nearly double the support from 10 years ago in 2011.

The Republican National Committee’s most recent party platform, in 2016, endorsed defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
