This Kew Gardens Hills School Is The Best In New York: Ranking

QUEENS, NY — A school in Queens has been named the best in New York, as well as among the top high schools in the country, for the second year in a row.

Townsend Harris High School, located on the Queens College campus in Kew Gardens Hills, was number one on a list of 11 city schools that made the top 100 in the U.S. News and World Report's latest "Best High Schools" annual ranking. All of the New York schools on the list are part of the city's public school system.

The Kew Gardens Hills high school was one of only several in Queens that got a top spot on the nationwide list. Queens High School for the Sciences at York College in Jamaica and The Baccalaureate School for Global Education in Astoria also made the list.

It is not the first time all three schools have earned top grades in the ranking. Last year, Townsend Harris High School ranked first in New York's best schools and 12th in the national ranking. In the 2022 list it slid slightly to 19th best in the country, according to the list.

Queens High School for the Sciences, though, rose in the rankings this year, coming in second on the list of the states's best schools and 25th in the national ranking, compared to last year when it placed fourth and 30th, respectively.

This year's schools were ranked on six measures: college readiness, college curriculum breadth, state assessment performance, state assessment proficiency, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance and graduation rates.

The data used in this year's ranking is from the 2019-20 academic school year. U.S. News adjusted its calculation of these measures to account for the impact COVID-19 had on schools in the 2019-20 school year.
