Kewanee soccer takes on state's 5th-ranked team; girls golf plays strong

The Kewanee Boiler Girls played the Knoxville Blue Bombers in varsity golf on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Lake Bracken, Galesburg.

Led by Mya Mirocha, Kewanee defeated Knoxville 200-246. Mirocha carded 37 for match medalist honors.

Also contributing to the Boiler Girls' score were Hope Peed, 49; Eleanor Burkhardt, 54; and Aspen Schwickerath, 60.

The Kewanee girls hosted Moline, Macomb and Bushnell-Prairie City on Thursday, Sept. 8, at Baker Park.

Macomb narrowly defeated Kewanee 188-194, but Kewanee topped Moline 194-205.

Mirocha and Ainsley Holthaus of Macomb tied for match medalist with 41s.

Schwickerath and Burkhardt shot 50s. Hope Peed recorded a 53.

Kewanee soccer

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, Kewanee traveled to Mendota to take on the state's fifth-ranked team. Although the Boilermakers played hard, the Trojans won 7-1.

Antonio Moran scored Kewanee's only goal in the 22nd minute of the second half. Kewanee launched eight shots at the goal.

Keeper Dillon Price recorded seven saves. Alan Saucedo made two and Eddie Leon, one.

A day later, the Boilermakers hit the road again. They played the Pioneers at the Alleman Athletic Complex, Moline.

"It was an evenly matched game," assistant coach Jesus Bermudez said. "The Boilermakers created many opportunities. The score did not reflect what happened on the field."

After a scoreless first half, Alleman opened the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute of the second half.

James Roginski knocked in the equalizer in the 31st minute, but Alleman put home the winner four minutes later.

The Boilermakers placed 10 shots at goal. A couple of them hit the post without going in.Price made 12 saves.

Kewanee tennis

The Kewanee girls defeated Bartonville Limestone 3-2 in Northeast Park on Wednesday, Sept. 7. 6-2Kewanee's No. 1 Noelia Martinez took two sets from Judi Georges, 6-4, 6-3. Another Boiler Girl, Amaris Sanchez, won the No. 2 match 7-5, 6-2 over Katelyn Smith.Rachel DeRycke and Whitney Minton of Kewanee topped Ava Bentley and Dymyn Preston 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 1 doubles match.Limestone took the other two doubles clashes. Claire Kocher and Jade Fulk defeated No. 2 Natalie Maxon and Harper Gillespie 6-0, 6-1. Cecillia Reed and Amanda Leach overcame No. 3 Londyn Washburn and Stephanie Espinoza 6-2, 6-2.

Kewanee volleyball

Bureau Valley needed a third set to defeat Kewanee 25-12, 26-28, 25-17 on Thursday, Sept. 8, in Manlius. The Boiler Girls slipped to 3-8 overall, 0-2 in the Three Rivers East.

Emma Crofton made five kills; Mayra Diaz, four; Makaela Salisbury, three; Larissa Meyer, two, and Nevyah Lewis and Avery Yepsen, one each.

Yepsen delivered 12 assists and Diaz, one. Crofton blocked two shots. Lewis served two aces and Diaz, one.

Naisha Colombani and Jillian Bennison recorded seven service points; Lewis, six; Yepsen, two, and Salisbury and Diaz, one apiece.

Colombani made 14 digs; Salisbury, nine; Bennison, seven; Lewis, six, and Diaz, three.

A-W golf

The Annawan-Wethersfield girls split with Mercer County and Galva on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Midland Country Club, Kewanee.

MerCo defeated Annawan-Wethersfield 227-251, but the Titans overcame the Wildcats 251-263.Elsie Cook of MerCo was the girls medalist. She shot 53.

Annawan-Wethersfield players were Elizabeth McGill, 56; Layla Kraft, 62; Katie Attig, 66, and Elise Manuel, 67. Elle Eastman shot 70 and Maya Hakes, 73.

In the boys meet, MerCo defeated Annawan-Wethersfield 185-224. Jaxson Willer of Galva was the boys medalist with a 40.

Titan medalists were Seth Moore and Caleb McGill, who carded 48s. Drew Wise, 63, and Payton Wallace, 65. Zach Gerber recorded a 73.

Wethersfield volleyball

Wethersfield defeated Knoxville 21-25, 25-22, 25-19 on Wednesday, Sept. 7, in the Blue Bullets' gym.Kendall Vincent notched nine kills; Emersyn Nelson and Kennady Anderson, eight each; Sophie Nimrick, six; Emma Ellenberger, four; Raqi Young, three, and Lajaya Angel, two. Young passed for 24 assists.

Flying Geese with blocks were Nimrick and Nelson, three apiece, and Ellenberger and Angel, two each.Nimrick landed two aces and Vincent and Cora Hodge, one apiece.

Hodge had 13 digs; Vincent, six; Young and Anderson, five each; Nimrick, two, and Angel and Ellenberger, one apiece.
