Kewanee sports roundup: Martin, Martinez are all-conference runners

Two Kewanee harriers earned All-Conference status at the Three Rivers meet on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Prophet Hills Golf Course near Prophetstown.

They were junior Natalee Martin, who finished 14th in 22:49.75, and freshman Esmeralda Martinez, 15th, 23:02.28. All-Conference goes to the top 15.

Sophomore Alejandra Martinez was 31st in 25:13.53.

Sherrard won the team championship with 42 points. Kewanee did not have enough runners for a team score.In the boys race, senior Dylan Rainwater was 35th in 19:40.47; freshman Jason Rusk, 46th, 20:34.25; sophomore Chase Palm, 53rd, 21:11.00; senior Will Taylor, 63rd, 21:44.34; sophomore Mitchal Thorp, 75th, 22:47.59, and junior Richard Millman 92, 29:38.88.

Riverdale placed first with 25 points; Erie-Prophetstown, second, 63; Sterling Newman, third, 69; Bureau Valley, fourth, 101; Mendota, fifth, 136; Rockridge, sixth, 172, and Kewanee, seventh, 172.

A-W cross country

Annawan-Wethersfield senior Danielle Johnson placed second in the Monmouth-Roseville Titan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Monmouth Park. Her time was 22:11.8.

Junior Elle Eastman came in 42nd at 35:14.5 and junior Elizabeth McGill, 43rd, 35:42.6.The Quincy Notre Dame girls topped the team standings with 29 points.

Among the boys, Titan sophomore Karson Schrum was 10th in 18:49.4; freshman Noah Feltner, 23rd, 20:57.3; sophomore Logan Davis, 29th, 21:51.1; junior Matthew Ponce, 43rd, 24:40.1, and sophomore Kylon Borseth, 50th, 28:57.2.

Mercer County finished first with 27 points; Quincy Notre Dame, second, 56; Macomb, third, 71; Rockridge, fourth, 107, and Annawan-Wethersfield, fifth, 108.

Wethersfield volleyball

The Flying Geese defeated the Stark County Rebels 25-7, 25-6, on Monday, Sept. 26, in Kewanee.

Kendall Vincent finished with 10 kills; Kennady Anderson, three; Emersyn Nelson, Sophie Nimrick and Marlie Lindstrom, two each, and Raqi Young and Lajaya Angel, one apiece.

Young powered the offense with 18 assists. Angel and Nelson each blocked two shots. Vincent served nine aces; Angel, three; Cora Hodge, two, and Anderson, one.

Players credited with digs were Vincent and Anderson, five each; Young, three; Angel and Hodge, two apiece, and Nelson, one.

Kewanee volleyball

Princeton dropped Kewanee 25-16, 23-25, 25-18 on Monday, Sept. 26, in Goods Gym.

Makaela Salisbury and Mayra Diaz each made five kills; Emma Crofton and Nevyah Lewis, four apiece; Avery Yepsen, three, and Larissa Meyer, two.

Yepsen passed for 16 assists and Kendyl DeBlieck, six. Meyer made two blocks and Lewis, Salisbury, Crofton and Diaz, one each. Yepsen served three aces and Diaz, two.

Players with service points were Yepsen, nine; Melissa Fragoso and Jillian Bennison, five each; Diaz, four; Lewis and Salisbury, three each, and DeBlieck, two.

Bennison collected 11 digs; Lewis, 10; Salisbury, nine; Fragoso, eight; Yepsen, five, and Diaz and DeBlieck, two apiece.

The teams matched up again a day later in Princeton, with the Tigers winning 25-15, 25-16.

Kewanee slipped to 8-16-1 overall.

Meyer made three kills; Lewis, Salisbury and Diaz, two each, and Bennison and Crofton, one apiece.

Yepsen powered the offense with seven assists and DeBlieck, three. From the back line, Yepsen served an ace.

Kewanee soccer

The Boilermakers led the Princeton Tigers four times on Monday, Sept. 26, on the Tiger pitch, but the hosts managed to tie the score every time and the match ended in a 4-4 draw.

Kewanee's Izac Contreras scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick in the 24th minute.Princeton scored the equalizer just before halftime.

In the fourth and seventh minutes of the second half, Boiler Cristian Cazares beat the defense with his speed. Between the two goals, Princeton also scored in the seventh minute.

The Tigers deadlocked the score 3-3 in the 20th minute, but six minutes later, Boiler Elijah Bermudez saw the keeper was out of goal. Bermudez lofted the ball over the keeper for a 4-3 edge.

The lead held up until the 34th minute, when Princeton tied the score.

The Boilermakers launched 15 shots at the Tiger goal. Keeper Dillon Price had 4 saves and Contreras and Julian Quintero each had an assist.
