Kewanee Sports Roundup: Mirocha wins 3 Rivers golf title

Mya Mirocha of Kewanee carded 80 to win the Three Rivers Conference girls golf championship on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Baker Park.

Rockridge won the team title with 384 strokes. Kewanee was second with 401, Orion third with 413, Sherrard fourth with 453, Bureau Valley fifth with 474, Princeton sixth with 477, Erie-Prophetstown seventh with 482 and St. Bede eighth with 486.

Mirocha led the All-Conference, which included the top 10 finishers. Boiler Girl Eleanor Burkhardt finished sixth with 100.

The next 10 girls were on the All-Conference second team, including Kewanee's Hope Peed, 13th with 109, and Aspen Schwickerath, 18th with 112.

A-W golf

"What a lovely evening for some golf," coach Ann Heller said on Thursday, Sept. 15, when Annawan-Wethersfield hosted Elmwood at Midland Golf Club.

The Annawan-Wethersfield girls defeated Elmwood 239-252. Titan Elizabeth McGill was the match medalist with 52.

Other Annawan-Wethersfield girls contributing to the team score were Elle Eastman, 54; Layla Kraft, 66, and Katie Attig, 67.

Also on the course was Maya Hakes, 83.

The Titan boys shot their best score of the year so far, Heller said. It was senior night for Payton Wallace. It was a tight match, but Elmwood prevailed 198-205.

Tanner Wake of Elmwood was the match medalist with 39.

Caleb McGill was the Annawan-Wethersfield medalist with 43. Chipping in to the team score were Seth Moore, who carded 48; Drew Wise, 51, and Wallace, 63. Also on the course was Zach Gerber, 84.

Kewanee volleyball

The Boiler Girls defeated the Hall Red Devils 17-25, 25-20, 25-15 on Thursday, Sept. 15, in Kewanee.With the win, Kewanee improved to 6-11 overall, 1-3 in the Three Rivers East.

Emma Crofton made 13 kills; Makaela Salisbury, eight; Jilly Bennison, five, and Larissa Meyer and Mayra Diaz, three each.

Avery Yepsen set up the hitters with 30 assists. Crofton blocked five shots.

Melissa Fragoso served three aces; Nevyah Lewis, two, and Yepsen, one.

Fragoso collected 11 service points; Yepsen, 10; Bennison, six; Salisbury, Naisha Colombani, Lewis and Salisbury, three each, and Diaz, one.

Getting digs were Colombani, 14; Bennison, 11; Lewis, eight; Fragoso, five; Salisbury, three, and Yepsen and Diaz, one apiece.

Kewanee soccer

Riverdale hosted Kewanee on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The Rams survived a Boilermaker surge in the second half to win 4-3.

Kewanee dominated the game, creating opportunities to score, said assistant coach Jesus Bermudez.

Riverdale scored in the first minute, but Kewanee's Cristian Cazares booted home the equalizer only two minutes later.

The Rams scored in the fifth and eighth minutes of the second half for a 3-1 lead. Their advantage went to three goals with one in the 20th minute.

Then the Boilermakers fired up their offense, with Cazares finding the net in the 25th minute and Yesenia Garcia hitting the back of the net in the 24th minute.

Kewanee was awarded a penalty kick in the final minute only to miss it.

The Boilermakers launched 23 shots at the Rams' goal.

James Roginski had one assist. Keepers Dillon Price and Alan Saucedo had one save each.

Wethersfield volleyball

Princeville defeated Wethersfield 25-17, 18-25, 25-22 on Wednesday, Sept. 14, in Princeville.

Emma Ellenberger piled up 12 kills and Kennady Anderson, five. Raqi Young dished 19 assists.

Ellenberger made two blocks and Young, one.

Young served three aces and Ellenberger, one.
