Key Clays Mill intersection will open Wednesday. Another section of road will close

The intersection of Clays Mill Road and Rosemont Garden and Lane Allen will re-open Wednesday morning, the first day of school for Fayette County Public Schools, Lexington city officials said this week.

The intersection has been closed since May 31 for the Clays Mill Road widening project, which has taken years to complete. The intersection was originally supposed to re-open on Monday but crews were still working on final touches. City officials said the intersection will re-open by Wednesday morning.

Clays Mill Road widening improvements started several years ago to relieve traffic congestion on the arterial that serves a fast-growing population between Harrodsburg and Nicholasville roads.

The intersection will open the same day Fayette County Public Schools will begin classes. There are several schools near that area including Clays Mill Elementary, Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary School and Lexington Catholic High School.

The final phase of the project — from Rosemont Garden to Harrodsburg Road — begins this week. That section of road will be closed for through traffic.

The culvert at Southbend Drive is being replaced. The section of road will not re-open until December, city officials said.

Motorists should use Lane Allen and Harrodsburg roads to detour around the closure.

Work is also beginning on Clays Mill from Waco Road to Pasadena Drive this week. Two-way traffic will be maintained. Motorists are advised to proceed cautiously through the construction area. Work on this section is expected to be completed this fall.
