Key dates to know as Miami Marlins get set to begin spring training

Spring training is finally here.

The Miami Marlins begin their second camp under manager Skip Schumaker on Thursday and will spend the next six weeks getting the roster prepared for the 2024 season as they attempt to build on a 2023 season in which they reached the playoffs for the first time in a full season since winning the World Series in 2003.

Why Marlins’ Skip Schumaker hopes familiarity doesn’t equal comfort as spring training begins

Here are some key dates to know as things start up.

Thursday: The first day official workout for Marlins pitchers and catchers.

Tuesday: The Marlins’ first official full-squad workout.

Feb. 24: Marlins spring training games begin. Miami opens its 30-game Grapefruit League schedule with a 1:05 p.m. game against the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter. All but two of the Marlins’ games will be played in either Jupiter (home games or “road” games against the Cardinals), West Palm Beach (road games against the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros) and Port St. Lucie (road games against the New York Mets). The exceptions: Feb. 29 at the New York Yankees in Tampa and March 1 at the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater.

The Yankees come to Jupiter to play the Marlins on March 4 and the Phillies come to Jupiter on March 16.

March 15: The Marlins play their Spring Breakout game — a matchup of the top Marlins prospects against the top Cardinals prospects — at 2:05 p.m. prior to 6:05 p.m. spring game between Marlins and Cardinals.

Spring Breakout, announced by MLB in December, is a four-day event across all spring training sites during which all 30 clubs will assemble rosters with 20 to 25 of their best prospects to take on prospects from other organizations.

Each Spring Breakout game is a seven-inning exhibition.

March 24: Final spring training game (against New York Mets in Jupiter)

March 28: Opening Day against the Pittsburgh Pirates
