Key games on tap this week for Corpus Christi area high school baseball, softball teams

This could be an important week for teams that either want to win district championships or are looking to earn playoff spots.

The calendar is firmly in April, which means, like last week, weather could play a factor along with it beginning to feel a little more like summer each day. By the end of this week, though, we should have a clearer picture in a number of district races.

Here is a look at some key games this week.

Baseball

Gregory Portland vs. Ray, Wednesday and Friday: The top two teams in 29-5A’s North Zone square off twice this week as G-P will play a rescheduled game against Miller on Monday. This is a key test for both teams.

Carroll vs. Veterans Memorial, Tuesday and Friday: This much anticipated two-game series will be a key indicator of where both teams are at this season.

Beeville at Rockport-Fulton, Friday: A key game in the battle to finish second behind Sinton in District 30-4A.

Calallen at Tuloso-Midway, Friday: The two rivals square off for the second time this season as Calallen won the first meeting on March 24.

Santa Gertrudis Academy at London, Friday: Arguably two of the best Class 3A teams in the state square off after London won a thriller back on March 28.

Softball

Flour Bluff at Veterans Memorial, Tuesday: A win by either team puts them in position to win the zone.

Ray at Gregory-Portland, Tuesday: Like baseball, the top two squads in the North Zone square off as the Ladycats look to wrap up zone play undefeated.

Port Lavaca Calhoun at Sinton, Friday: The Pirates want to pay back the Sandcrabs after losing to them on March 21.
