Key takeaways from Orange County NY Elections 2023: Recap, results

City of Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey easily won re-election in a three-way race on Tuesday.

That was among the highlights in Orange County races this Election Day.

Harvey won a second full four-year term in office, drawing 1,163 votes on the Democratic and Working Families party tickets. He easily outdistanced two challengers, independent candidate Hael V. Stewart-Fisher, with 368 votes, and former city councilman John Giudice, who received 353 votes on the Republican and Conservative tickets.

Harvey, a former city councilman, came to the mayor's job first by appointment and then in a special election in 2018 to fill out the term of his predecessor, Judy Kennedy, after she passed away.

Republican Dominic Cicalese was elected mayor of Port Jervis, narrowly defeating Councilwoman Elizabeth Miller, 864 to 809. He will succeed Mayor Kelly Decker.

In New Windsor, voters chose current Town Board member Stephen Bedetti, a Republican, over former state assemblyman Colin Schmitt, running on the Conservative ticket, to succeed incumbent Supervisor George Meyers, who did not seek another term. Bedetti received 2,390 votes to 1,092 for Schmitt in unofficial totals.

In the town of Montgomery, voters chose County Legislator L. Stephen Brescia, a Republican, as their next supervisor over Susan Cockburn, a former supervisor running as an independend candidate. Brescia received 2,178 votes in unofficial totals to 1,163 for Cockburn.

Among other towns with competitive supervisor races, Highlands Town Supervisor Bob Livsey, a Democrat, was one of only two incumbents to be re-elected. He defeated James DiSalvo, a Republican, 658 to 481 in unofficial results. The other was Cornwall Supervisor Josh Wojehowski, a Democrat, who received 2,009 votes to 1,613 for Helen Bunt, a Republican.

Elsewhere, Chester town board member Brandon Holdridge, a Democrat, defeated incumbent Supervisor Robert Valentine, a Republican, in the race for the town's top elective post, 1,586 to 962.

In Tuxedo, Republican David McMillen defeated current deputy supervisorf Jay Reichgott, a Democrat, in the race to replace current Supervisor Ken English. McMillen received 552 votes to 461 for Reichgott in unofficial totals.

In the town of Wallkill, Councilman Neil Meyer, a Democrat, was leading incumbent Republican Supervisor George Serrano by a narrow margin, 1,274 to 1,203, for the supervisor's post, as of Wednesday morning. But by Wednesday afternoon, Serrano had pulled ahead by three votes, 1,872 to 1,869, in the latest unofficial totals.

And in the town of Woodbury, town council member Kathryn Luciani, a Republican, defeated incumbent Democratic Supervisor Thomas Burke, 1,366 to 969, for the supervisor's post.

The Village of Woodbury re-elected Mayor Andrew Giacomazza, who ran as an independent candidate. He received 1,019 votes in unofficial totals to 771 for Republican John Kelemen and 514 for Democrat Tyler Etzel Jr.
