Keys to Henderson County's victory over Marshall County in 6-A First District opener

HENDERSON, Ky. — Henderson County continues to play some of its best football as it enters the most important period of the regular season.

The Colonels are off to a perfect start to Class 6-A First District play after using the running game and defense to control Friday's 49-7 win against Marshall County. And now they're winners of three in a row heading into October.

Henderson (5-1, 1-0) used defense to force turnovers, one of which led to a touchdown. That group has improved each of the past three weeks since allowing 31 points to Boyle County. The Colonels then yielded 22 to Central Hardin, 13 to Paducah Tillman and just the lone touchdown to the Marshals.

They took a 42-0 lead into halftime to force a running clock, which was already ticking throughout as the Colonels had 166 rushing yards compared to Marshall's six.

"The kids came out playing fast," Henderson coach Josh Boston said. "They were confident in the game plan and did everything that we needed them to do in the first half to be successful. We were able to get young guys on the field in the second half."

That includes sophomore running back Anthony Burrus, who had his first touchdown of the season on a five-yard scamper late in the game. Burrus, who is Henderson's fourth-leading rusher, finished with 67 total yards.

Luke Dalton, senior middle linebacker: 11-yard fumble recovery for TD

Coach Josh Boston's takeaway

"As I told the kids, (Friday) night started a new season," he said. "These games mean something different. You're playing for home playoff games and doing those kinds of things now that we're out of our non-conference play. We had to treat (the Marshall game) like a new season. Things are different now that we're in the games that mean something other than just your record."

Looking ahead

Henderson has two of its next three district games on the road, starting with Apollo (1-5, 0-1) next Friday. While the Colonels' have won three of the last four in that series, their lone loss to the Eagles came last season when they fell 21-10. As a result, Apollo finished a game ahead of Henderson for second place in the Class 6A First District.
