KFC bringing back Double Down ‘sandwich’ after nearly 10-year break

It’s baaaack.

KFC is bringing its novelty “Double Down” — a bacon, cheese, and sauce sandwich that substitutes fried chicken cutlets for a bun — back for a limited time. And it’s not an April Fool’s Day joke this time either.

The fast-food chain debuted the decadent, 950-calorie behemoth on April Fool’s Day in 2010, selling millions before removing it from menus in 2014. Still, the sandwich became a viral phenomenon and was one of the major salvos in the never-ending competition between KFC, Popeyes and McDonald’s.

Eaters who missed it the last time around, or have been eagerly awaiting its return, can pick up their Double Down starting March 6.

KFC said a version of the sandwich with brioche bread, pickles and slightly less chicken would also be available for customers “who aren’t so sure about embracing the ‘no bun’ life.”

“The Double Down is one of the most buzzworthy fast food menu items ever,” said KFC’s U.S. chief marketing officer Nick Chavez in a press release. “After nearly a decade of people begging for its return, we’re embracing the chaos, bringing back our most iconic sandwich ever for just four weeks.”

KFC has already shaken up its offerings in 2023. The chain recently announced several other changes, including the removal of fried chicken wings, popcorn chicken, strawberry lemonade, cookies and “Nashville hot sauce” from its menu.

However, earlier this year, the chain brought back “the cult fav KFC Chizza” — a “pizza” made with chicken tenders, pizza sauce, cheese, onions and peppers.
