LIVINGSTON, NJ — Polls have closed and ballots are being counted for the general election in New Jersey, which took place mostly via mail due to the coronavirus. According to unofficial results, as of Wednesday, Vineeta Khanna is leading the Livingston school board race. Alfred Anthony and Michael Vieira ran unopposed for town council.

It’s not clear when certified results will be released in Essex County. Due to the pandemic, mail-in ballots postmarked on Nov. 3 were accepted by the clerk’s office until Nov. 10, the same day provisional ballots were counted. The clerk has until Nov. 23 to certify the results and remit them to state officials.

LIVINGSTON SCHOOL BOARD

A total of four candidates competed for a three-year term on the Livingston Board of Education. The candidates were Jenissa Arnette, Vineeta Khanna, Bridgette Nevola and James Calderon.

As of Nov. 11, Khanna held a slight lead in the four-way race. Here are the unofficial results as of 3:14 p.m., according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • Jenissa Arnette - 3,512

  • James Calderon - 2,143

  • Vineeta Khanna - 4,222

  • Bridgette Nevola - 2,935

The winning candidate will take his or her seat at a pivotal time in the Livingston Public School District.

Last week, staff and students returned for in-person learning at Heritage Middle School and Livingston High School. It's the first time since the pandemic began in March that all of the district's buildings have been open and occupied.

Other schools and grade levels opened their doors for in-person learning earlier this month, as per the district's hybrid model. Students are now attending a mix of in-person and remote classes.

"Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen," administrators said. "Let's all keep working hard to make sure we keep moving in the right direction."

LIVINGSTON TOWN COUNCIL

Alfred Anthony and Michael Vieira each ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination in Livingston, where two, four-year seats on the township council will be available.

Here are the unofficial results as of 3:14 p.m., according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • Alfred Anthony - 11,855

  • Michael Vieira - 11,802
