In case you somehow completely forgot, Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s relationship went up in a ball of flames earlier this year after he kissed Kylie Jenner’s best friend, Jordyn Woods. It was messy, obviously.

Despite that, the two of them share an adorable daughter, True, and it looks like they’re pretty intent on successfully co-parenting. Tristan made his way to Los Angeles this past weekend for True’s first birthday party. As you can imagine, things got awkward!

In the few videos of the party that surfaced, the two of them were definitely tense, according to body-language expert Blanca Cobb. Here’s what went down.

Khloé straight-up ignored Tristan.

This video starts with Khloé talking to another person at the party, and at one point, Tristan asked Khloé, “You okay, momma?” and she fully ignored him. Then he tried to reach for True, and while Khloé did turn to face him, she basically didn’t acknowledge him at all. Awkward.

Cobb explained that there’s a serious lack of eye contact in this entire video, which makes total sense given their history.

“You tend to not give somebody eye contact when you’re pissed at them or they have hurt you in some way,” she said. “When you’re feeling some type of negative emotion toward somebody, you tend to disconnect. That’s a way to protect yourself.”

When you’re looking at someone who has hurt you, you tend to feel that hurt all over again, which could explain Khloé’s facial expressions in this setting.

“That just brings the hurt and the anger up in the forefront. It’s another reminder because you’re actually looking at that.”

From Khloé’s body language here, it looks like she’s not only trying to diss Tristan but also protect herself, while Tristan basically just looks like he doesn’t know what to do.

Khloé stood practically a mile away from Tristan and looked super uncomfortable during “Happy Birthday.”

Usually first-time parents are giddy at their child’s first-birthday party, but there’s only one word to describe Khloé’s body language here: unenthused. Not only are she and Tristan standing at practically opposite ends of the party, but her face doesn’t look happy either.

“She’s not very enthusiastic and you can see it even with her face. Normally you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s your birthday!’ You know, you have the crow’s-feet by your eyes and you have these big smiles, which means your cheek muscles are pushed up,” Cobb said. “That level of enthusiasm isn’t there. Her hands don’t seem to be that emotive, but her facial expressions aren’t matching it either. So she’s a little subdued.”

Not only that, but she’s kind of fidgety. She looks down at the cake, then fixes her robe, then looks back up at True. Those are classic signs that someone’s uncomfortable.

Tristan looked totally comfortable with True.

After Tristan and Khloé split, a source said that Khloé felt like he had hardly any interest in being a part of his daughter’s life. His body language at this party, though, is nothing but loving. He’s bouncing her up and down, swaying her from side to side, and rubbing her belly.

“That is definitely what you would see with parents and their little ones. Even when [babies are] comfortable, you still want to keep them happy,” Cobb said. “And it’s a way for you to connect with them. It’s still a way for you to show love.”

Final thoughts: Tristan and Khloé both look more comfortable when they’re holding True.

Basically, in the first two videos, whoever isn’t holding True seems like they don’t really know what to do with themselves. Cobb agreed True was “absolutely” a security blanket for Khloé and Tristan.

“They’re both flapping, if you think about it. In the first video, he was flapping. He wasn’t sure what to do with this hands, but then he’s trying to reach out to his baby, and he was trying to get a bit of attention from Khloé,” Cobb said.

And in the second video, Khloé definitely looks more uncomfortable. “Not only are people there celebrating her daughter’s birthday, but she has to know, on some level, people are also watching her and Tristan....There are probably a million and one questions running through her mind as this is happening.”
