KHS soccer players savor first game at school's new turf field

Kewanee soccer hosted Orion-Sherrard for a historic match on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The boys played the first match of the season on the turf in the newly renovated Kewanee Stadium, battling to a 3-3 tie.

Orion-Sherrard scored the first goal in the seventh minute, only to have Kewanee's Cristian Cazares boot home the equalizer in the 15th minute.

The half ended with United leading 2-1. Orion-Sherrard bumped the lead to 3-1 in the sixth minute of the second half, but Boilermaker James Roginski sent home a goal in the 26th minute and Jack Coombes deadlocked the score in the final two minutes of the match.

Antonio Moran and Izac Contreras each had an assist. Kewanee took 10 shots on goal. Keeper Dillon Price made five saves.

Kewanee had a 1-2 record at the War on 34 in Earlville last weekend.

On Friday, Aug. 26, LaSalle-Peru edged Kewanee 2-1. It was a close match, with both teams playing well all over the field and having chances to win.

The Boilermakers took three close shots. Roginski scored Kewanee's goal.

Nine saves were credited to Kewanee's keeper.

A day later, DePue-Hall slipped past Kewanee 2-1. Although Kewanee was in control most of the match, the only goal came off the foot of Contreras midway through the first half.

Kewanee had plenty of opportunities, launching 16 shots.

Price made three saves.

The Boilermakers showed plenty of firepower in a 6-1 thrashing of Yorkville.

Cazares notched a hat trick, while Contreras added two goals and Roginski one. Kewanee took 13 shots at goal. Contreras passed for two assists and Roginski for one.

Keeper Alan Saucedo had two saves and Roginski one.

Kewanee opened the season with a 4-3 loss to Limestone on Monday, Aug. 22, in Bartonville. The Boilermakers enjoyed a 2-0 lead in the first half, and when the Rockets scored in the second half, the Boilermakers responded with a goal for a 3-1 advantage.

Five of the Kewanee players suffered cramps during the game, making it difficult for the Boilermakers to carry out their game plan.

Goal scorers were Contreras, Cazares and Roginski. Tyson Currie and Cazares each had an assist.Kewanee took nine shots on goal.

Price had eight saves, including one on a penalty kick.

A day later, Kewanee traveled to Peoria Christian. Although the Boilermakers launched five shots, none of them landed in the back of the net.

The Boilermakers were more aggressive in the second half. Price recorded four saves.

Kewanee's record is 1-4-1.

Kewanee tennis

Mendota defeated Kewanee 5-0 on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Northeast Park. The Boiler Girls are 1-3 for the season.

In singles matches, the Kewanee girls pushed their opponents to three sets. Mendota's #1 Ella Lewis put together a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 win over Noelia Martinez, and Natalie Salinas topped Kewanee's #2, Amaris Sanchez, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3.

Alexis Finley and Talya Schwaegerman took the #1 doubles match 6-2, 6-1 over Natalie Maxon and Londyn Washburn.

Boiler Girls Rachel DeRycke and Whitney Minton pushed #2 Isabelle Escatel and Mariah Figueroa in the second set, but the Trojans ultimately won 6-2, 7-6 (5).

In the #3 match, Karli Miars and Julie Krueger decisioned Kewanee's Andrea Lang and Stephanie Espinoza 6-4, 4-1, retired.

Kewanee golf

The Kewanee girls hosted Bureau Valley, ROWVA-Williamsfield and Knoxville on Monday, Aug. 29 at Baker Park.

Bureau Valley topped the field with 216. ROWVA-Williamsfield was second at 228 and Knoxville third at 234. Kewanee did not have enough girls for a team.

Boiler Girl Mya Mirocha was the match medalist with 39. Aspen Schwickerath shot 49 and Hope Peed 50.

Baker Park was the site of the boys competition on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The Boilermakers hosted Hall and St. Bede on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

St. Bede golfers totaled 169; Hall, 174 and Kewanee, 201.

Landen Plym of Hall was the match medalist. He carded 34.

Lucas Ensley was the Kewanee medalist with 45. Emmitt Brokaw finished with 47; Will Rumbold, 53; Andy Osborne, 56; Shaan Dev, 59, and Owen Laue, 64.

Kewanee volleyball

The Boiler Girls slipped to 0-1 in the Three Rivers East and 3-5 overall with a 25-23, 25-16 loss to Newman Central Catholic on Tuesday, Aug. 30, in Sterling.

Emma Crofton led Kewanee with four kills. Larissa Meyer added three; Nevyah Lewis, two, and Makaela Salisbury and Mayra Diaz, one each.

Avery Jepsen set up the hitters with 11 assists.

Naisha Colombani served three aces and Salisbury and Yepsen, one each.

Salisbury finished with seven service points; Melissa Fragoso, four; Diaz, two, and Lewis and Bennison, one apiece.

Colombani notched six digs; Lewis, five; Bennison, four; Fragoso and Salisbury, three apiece, and Diaz, one.
