KHS sports roundup: Cross country, volleyball, tennis and golf all in play

Coach Tonya Vincent's Wethersfield volleyball team defeated Bureau Valley 25-22, 25-19 on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Manlius.

The visitors flew to the net for 15 kills. Sophie Nimrick had five; Kennady Anderson and Kendall Vincent, three each; Emersyn Nelson 2, and Emma Ellenberger and Raqi Young, one apiece.

Young delivered 13 assists. Ellenberger and Cora Hodge served four aces each.

Blocks were credited to Vincent, two, and Young, Nimrick and Lajaya Angel, one apiece.

Vincent and Hodge tallied eight digs each; Ellenberger and Anderson, seven apiece; Nimrick, four, and Young, three.

Kewanee cross country

Coach Chad Palm's Kewanee team held its first home meet on Thursday, Aug. 25, at the 3-mile Boiler cross country course over the golf layout in Baker Park.

Runners from Orion, Monmouth United and Peru St. Bede competed with Kewanee.

The Kewanee boys collected their first team win of the season. Boilermakers Dylan Rainwater and Chase Palm recorded the fastest time of their careers on the Baker Park course. Rainwater, a senior, finished second in 20:57, while sophomore Palm was fifth at 22:36.

Senior Will Taylor was eighth at 23:18; sophomore Mitchal Thorp, ninth at 25:03; freshman Jason Rusk, 10th at 25:18, and junior Richard Millman, 12th at 30:43.

Boiler Girl Esmeralda Martinez , a freshman, finished third in 24 minutes, 44 seconds. Sophomore Alejandra Martinez was sixth at 28:01.

Kewanee will compete in Limestone's Rocket Run for the Stars Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Alpha Park in Bartonville. The first race is at 8 a.m.

Kewanee tennis

Coach Donna Havelka's tennis team hosted Rock Island on Tuesday, Aug. 23, Northeast Park. The Rocks won 8-1.Whitney Minton claimed Kewanee's only win with an 8-0 drubbing of Alayna McKinley in the No. 4 match.Maddy Chapman came close to collecting a W. She battled No. 6 Chloe Cooper before falling 8-6.

Rock Island's No. 1, Alexis Engels, defeated Noelia Martinez, 8-3. Leah Kitterman overcame Rachel DeRycke 8-0 in the No. 2 match.

Other Rocks with wins were No. 3 Niema Rogers, 8-0 over Amaris Sanchez, and No. 5, Elaina Adlfinger, 8-0 over Andrea Lang.

Rock Island swept the doubles matches. No. 1 Alexis Engels and Alayna McKinley topped Natalie Maxon and Harper Gillespie 9-0. In the No. 2 clash, Niema Rogers and Leah Kitterman defeated Martinez and Sanchez 8-2.

No. 3 Man Nuam and Elaina Adlfinger beat Londyn Washburn and Stephanie Espinoza 8-1.

A-W golf

Coach Ann Heller's Titan boys hosted Erie-Prophetstown, Bureau Valley and Morrison for a quadrangular on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Midland Golf Course.

Bureau Valley topped the field with 170. Erie-Prophetstown reported 195; Morrison, 227, and Annawan-Wethersfield, 244.

Wyatt Novotny of Bureau Valley was the match medalist with 38. Seth Moore was Annawan-Wethersfield's medalist with 50. Bryce VanDeWostine led Erie-Prophetstown with 46, while Adam Tichler paced Morrison with 49.

Besides Moore, Titans contributing to the team score were Caleb McGill, 60, and Payton Wallace and Drew Wise, 67s. Zach Gerber shot 74.

Kewanee golf

Coach Ryan Hansen's Kewanee girls played Farmington and Peoria on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Oak Run, Dahinda.

Farmington tallied 221. The other schools did not have enough girls for a team score.

Kewanee's Mya Mirocha was the match medalist with 39. Megan Turner led Farmington with 53. Peoria's scores were not available.

Erie-Prophetstown hosted Kewanee and Bureau Valley on Monday, Aug. 22, at Lake Erie.

Bureau Valley finished with 168, while Kewanee shot 190 and Erie-Prophetstown 204.

The Storm's Wyatt Novotny was match medalist with 40. Will Rumbold was the Boilers' medalist with 45, and Blake Geuns the Panthers' medalist with 46.

Besides Rumbold, golfers contributing to the Kewanee team score were Andy Osborne, 46; Lucas Ensley, 49, and Emmitt Brokaw, 50. Also playing were Shaan Dev, 56, and Nolan Benecke, 67.

Kewanee hosted Galva and Princeville the next day at Baker Park. The Boilermakers defeated the Princes 195-235. The Wildcats did not have a full team.

Jaxson Willer of Galva was the match medalist. He carded 39. Kewanee's medalist was Osborne, 43. Princeville's was Scott Shock, 46.

Playing for Kewanee were Rumbold, 48; Brokaw, 49; Ensley and Dev, 55s, and Benecke, 57.

The Boilers played Wednesday, Aug. 24, against Ridgewood and Monmouth-Roseville at Valley View Country Club, Cambridge.

Mon-Rose finished with 186; Ridgewood, 196, and Kewanee, 201.

Bryson Hill of Mon-Rose was the match medalist. He scored 40. Brokaw was the Kewanee medalist with 42, while Gracie Russell was the Ridgewood medalist with 45.

Ensley recorded 50; Osborne, 52; Rumbold, 57; Dev, 60, and Owen Laue, 67.
