Dayton Police and Fire were dispatched to the 4000 block of West Third Street at around 1:10 a.m. after receiving reports of car on fire, News Center 7 confirmed with crews at the scene.

No one was injured in the car fire; however, the driver reported that the car spontaneously combusted after stopping at a stop light, News Center 7 crews stated.

The car was identified as a Kia Sportage, one of the models listed as a potential fire hazard.

News Center 7 previously reported that Hyundai and Kia were recalling almost 485,000 cars because they posed as potential fire hazards.

Owners were told to keep their vehicles outside and away from structures until they were repaired.

The fires were thought to be caused by an issue with the anti-lock brake control module which could cause an electrical short.

The list of recalled cars included certain makes and models:

  • Kia Sportage SUVs from 2014 to 2016

  • Kia K900 sedans from 2016 through 2018

  • Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs from 2016 through 2018

  • Hyundai Santa Fe Sports from 2017 and 2018

  • Hyundai Santa Fe XL from 2019

  • Hyundai Tucson SUVs from 2014 and 2015

Car dealerships replaced a fuse in the cars that were recalled.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration started an investigation into engine compartment fires linked to the automakers.

The first recall due to an engine failure and fire was in September 2015.
