Kick off the fall sports seasons, check out a rodeo this weekend in Dallas County

Back to School Night

4-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17 on 2nd Street.

Check out the Perry Farmers Market from 4-7 p.m. every Thursday, but especially on the Third Thursday of the month for special events. Special guests will surely help get you in the back-to-school spirit on Aug. 17. The Perry Community School District will be set up in Josh Davis Memorial Plaza. Jenny Adair, the Teacher of the Year, will be honored at 4:15 p.m. Troy Griffith, who recently received the 2023 Tom Horn Memorial Award from the Iowa Pupil Transportation Association, will also be recognized. Other activities include new teacher recognition, band performance, Popsicles with Principals and the Perry Booster Club Jays Nest Pop-Up. Guests on 2nd Street will include DMACC, St. Pat's Catholic School, ISU Extension & Outreach, Dallas County Health Department, Perry Lutheran Homes / Acorns & Oaks, Zion Recovery, Friends of the Library, Short Years Partnership and New Opportunities school supply drive, plus Showtime Dance Studio with registration from 5-7 p.m. and a performance at 6 p.m.

Perry Activities and Booster Club Fall Kickoff

5-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at Perry High School and Dewey Field.

The 2023 Fall Kickoff will be held on Friday, Aug. 12. The event will kick off with the PHS Volleyball Blue and White Scrimmage at 5 p.m. in the high school gym. The Dewey Field gates open at 6 p.m. and high school fall activities participants will be introduced at 6:30 p.m. Perry football will take on Woodward-Granger during a scrimmage at 7 p.m. The Booster Club will also host a membership drive from 6-8 p.m., along with apparel sales through the Jays Nest. Attendees are asked to bring a sports drink to support Bluejay and Jayette activities.

Fan Fest

4:30-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at Van Meter High School, Veterans Reception Center.

Come and help kick off the 2023 school year at at Fan Fest, sponsored by the Van Meter Athletic Booster Club. Don't miss the Parade of Athletes. The parade highlights all students TK-12 by walking the track with their grade. After the parade, head over to the Veterans Reception Center to enjoy food trucks, music, bounce houses and the silent auction. The night will kick off with the football scrimmage at 4:30 p.m. at the high school, followed by the volleyball scrimmage at 5 p.m. and the parade of athletes at 6:15 p.m. The festivities move over to the Veterans Reception Center as food trucks open at 6 p.m. The silent auction will be open from 7-8:30 p.m. and a DJ and entertainment will be available from 7-10 p.m.

Perry Firefighters Association Grab-n-Go Dinner

5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 at 908 Willis Ave., Perry.

The Perry Firefighters Association will serve a Grab-n-Go Dinner on Friday, Aug. 18 in the Perry Fire Department parking lot. The menu includes hot dogs for $5, cheeseburgers or pork loin sandwiches for $6 and steak sandwiches for $10. Each meal comes with chips and a drink.

Adel Breakout Rodeo

Aug. 18-19 at Dallas County Fairgrounds, Adel.

The 2023 Adel Breakout Rodeo will feature two nights of rodeo action by the Wright Rodeo Co. on Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Dallas County Fairgrounds. Mutton busting will be held both nights. Fifty slots are open each night and those looking to participate can pre-register online. Gates open at 5 p.m. with mutton busting starting at 6 p.m. and the rodeo at 7:30 p.m., followed by live music. Admission is $10 for ages 12 and up, $5 for ages 6-11 and free for ages 5 and under. Find more information on the Adel Breakout Rodeo Facebook page.

Woodward Volunteer Fire Department End of Summer Bash

11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Woodward Fire Department.

Join the Woodward Volunteer Fire Department for its end of summer bash on Saturday, Aug. 19. A free-will donation lunch will be served. The menu includes hot dogs, pork chop on a stick and lemonade. Drawings for the summer raffle will also be held, no need to be present. Two additional drawings will be held for those present on Saturday.

Scan and Collect Day

1-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Carnegie Library Museum.

Do you have old photos or historical materials that should not be lost forever? Bring items in to donate or bring photos, etc. and the Perry Historical Society will scan them that day and return them to you. Help us save Perry's history.

Outdoor Movie Night

8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Tripple Berry Farm, Linden.

Join Tripple Berry Farm for a back-to-school outdoor movie night on Saturday, Aug. 19. "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" will be shown at dusk, around 8:30-9 p.m. Concessions open at 8 p.m. and will include mini donuts, hot dogs, candy, ice cream, soda, raspberry lemonade, free popcorn and more. Bring your own blanket/lawn chairs.

Dallas Center Fall Festival

Aug. 25-26 in Dallas Center.

The Dallas Center Fall Festival returns on Aug. 25-26 with a Feelin Groovy at the 2023 DC Fall Fest theme. The event will feature a carnival, parade, sand volleyball, cornhole and pickleball tournaments, dog mayor contest, car show, pedal pull, 5K and toddler trot, bingo, live music, fireworks and more. Find more information on the DC Celebrations Facebook page or website. Carnival tickets are also available for pre-sale through 5 p.m. on Aug. 25 at local Dallas Center businesses, including Sugar Grove Goods, Kids Korner, Medicap, Raccoon Valley Bank, The Baker's Pantry and the library. Proceeds from all pre-sale tickets will go towards the cost of the carnival.

Granger Days

Granger Days will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Centennial Park. There are many fun events planned for people of all ages which include children’s inflatables, chicken bingo, dunk tank, axe throwing, parade, bags tournament, sand volleyball tournament, pizza, pints & puzzle, music by Spotlight Entertainment DJ Service, vendor village, live music by Passing Zone featuring Tom Acton, beer tent, food trucks, a movie in the park and fireworks. ¡Viva Perry! Latino Festival

10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at Pattee Park.

Hispanics United for Perry will present the annual ¡Viva Perry! Latino Festival on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Pattee Park. The parade will kick off the festivities at 10 a.m. The parade, open to anyone looking to participate, will go down 10th Street and Willis to Pattee Park. Kids activities will be offered from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other activities include music, dancers, food, vendors and more throughout the day.

Build the Blue Event

5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 at Hotel Pattee Spring Valley Ballroom, Perry.

Dallas County Democrats and Perry Area Democrats will host a Build the Blue event on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at the Hotel Pattee. Originally planned for the Courtyard Cafe, the location has been changed to Spring Valley Ballroom due to higher than anticipated ticket sales. Rob Sand, Auditor for the State of Iowa, and Iowa Senator Sarah Trone Garriot will be speaking. Heavy appetizers will be served. Tickets will be sold until Aug. 23. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at Iowa Dallas County Democrats website under events tab, Build the Blue. Everyone is invited to the Crossroads Care Closet - you can find clothing, kitchenware, household items, tools, etc. It’s all FREE! The next dates will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2.
