Kids' Food Basket officially launches farm in Holland Township with Fall Fest

HOLLAND TWP. — A nonprofit focused on providing nutritional meals to school-age children has officially launched a 10-acre farm in Holland Township.

Kids' Food Basket started farming in Kent County about six years ago, according to representative Jason Lundberg, who brought approval for the farm in Holland Township before the municipality's planning commission in April.

The farm at 340 104th Avenue was created in partnership with Ridge Point Community Church.

"They've been so generous to offer up acres for us to develop this site," Lundberg said. "We'll have three structures to support farming, and it'll be a volunteer-driven farm."

Volunteers will pull weeds, plant seeds and help transfer food to the nonprofit's Holland site at 652 Hastings Ave.

The nonprofit's Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1, was open to the public and included fall treats, lawn games and activity stations. The event served as the community debut of the farm, which broke ground in the spring.

Kids' Food Basket has served children in Ottawa County since 2015 and began a pilot program in Allegan County in 2019, but didn't have a permanent location in the area until 2020.

"As a community member, I'm so excited and commend you for this work," said planning commissioner Miska Rynsburger, an elementary school principal with Holland Christian, in April. "This is an opportunity for kids to understand not just about gardening and food sourcing, but also to be impactful in their community — and the impact of this is far-reaching, and that's what we want for our citizens.
