Kids find Las Vegas mom’s body after ex-boyfriend allegedly stabbed her to death: police
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man faces a charge of open murder after police said he stabbed and killed his ex-girlfriend while her young children, who found her body the next morning, were in the home, police documents said.
On Jan. 25 at around 8:45 a.m., officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were called to a short-term rental in the 8700 block of Tom Noon Avenue, near Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive.
When officers arrived, they found a woman with multiple stab wounds to her back, neck, and chest on the floor of a bedroom. Clark County firefighters pronounced her dead at the scene.
She was identified as 33-year-old Breyanna Sotomayor, of Las Vegas.
Shortly before police arrived, Sotomayor’s children used an iPad to FaceTime Sotomayor’s mother, who was in California, the report stated. The children told their grandmother that Sotomayor wouldn’t wake up and there was “blood all around her.”
Sotomayor’s mother then called 911 in California to request help in Las Vegas.
Police said Sotomayor’s personal belongings, such as her phone, purse, ID, and vehicle, were missing from the rental.
Sotomayor’s family members told police that she was evicted from her residence and decided to stay in a short-term rental until she could find a new residence. They said she asked her ex-boyfriend, David Perry, 34, to help her pack and move because she did not have anyone else to help her, according to the report.
Sotomayor and Perry dated for several months in 2023, but records show Perry was arrested for domestic battery strangulation against Sotomayor in September. According to police, the case was dismissed due to a “lack of cooperation” from Sotomayor, and Perry was released from custody in October.
According to the report, Sotomayor and Perry dated until the beginning of January 2024, when they broke up and Perry moved out.
Sotomayor’s children, ages 5, 6, and 6, told police that Perry was in the home when they went to sleep. One of the children said she heard loud banging noises and her mom yelling during the night, the report said.
When the children woke up, Perry was gone. They told police no one else was in the home with them besides Sotomayor and Perry.
Sotomayor’s friend told police that she was on the phone with Sotomayor that night and heard her and Perry arguing about several topics, including each other’s sexual partners, Perry’s lack of a job, and social media posts Sotomayor made referring to Perry, the report stated.
The doorbell camera at the home showed Sotomayor, Perry, and the children arriving at the location at around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 24. At around 10 p.m., the video showed a pizza being delivered to the residence.
The next footage showed someone resembling Perry leaving at around 6 a.m., covering his face with a hood and closing the door by grabbing the doorknob with a bathrobe. Police said he was attempting to avoid leaving fingerprints.
No recordings of anyone else entering or leaving the rental home were captured between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Body-worn camera video showed the deadbolt of the inside garage door was locked from the inside, showing no one entered the home through the garage after Perry left, according to the report.
After the homicide was reported to local media outlets, Perry attempted to contact Sotomayor’s family through a third party, claiming he did not know what happened and saying she was still alive when he left, the report stated.
According to Metro police, Perry was found by law enforcement in Louisville, Kentucky, on Jan. 31, one week after the murder, and taken into custody.
He faces a charge of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon. A booking photo for Perry was not immediately available.
