KIEL – The U.S. Post Office on Fremont Street in Kiel could soon be known as the “Trooper Trevor J. Casper Post Office Building.”

The designation would honor Kiel native Trevor Casper, a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper who was killed in the line of duty during his first solo assignment on March 24, 2015.

Casper was 21 when he was gunned down by an armed robbery and murder suspect outside a Pick ’n Save store just off Interstate 41 in Fond du Lac. He was the youngest police officer killed in the line of duty in Wisconsin history.

Before Casper collapsed, he returned fire, killing the suspect, Steven Timothy Snyder, before the shooter could harm busy shoppers who were just around the corner in the bustling strip mall parking lot.

Just months before he was killed, Casper had fulfilled his dream by graduating from the State Patrol Academy and being stationed at the State Trooper Base in Fond du Lac.

The bipartisan bill to rename the post office is being led by U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, a Republican in his fifth term representing Wisconsin’s Sixth Congressional District. Joining Grothman in the effort are fellow Wisconsin representatives Tom Tiffany, Scott Fitzgerald, Derrick Van Orden, Gwen Moore, Bryan Steil, Mike Gallagher and Mark Pocan.

“Trooper Casper’s life was tragically cut short in 2015 as he became the youngest police officer to be killed in the line of duty in our state’s history,” Grothman said in a news release. “Renaming this post office in his honor serves as a lasting tribute to this young man who was unwavering in his commitment to keeping our streets safe.

“Trooper Casper’s sacrifice should remind us all of the tremendous debt of gratitude we owe to our law enforcement officers,” Grothman continued. “Let us remember Trooper Casper’s heroism and his dedication to duty, and let us honor his memory by supporting those who continue to serve and protect our great state of Wisconsin.”

The ceremony honors and pays tribute to all of the nation's fallen law enforcement officers and, in particular, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on Fond du Lac City streets: City of Fond du Lac police officers William Prinslow, Nick Klaske and Craig Birkholz, and Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Trevor Casper, who is Kevin's son.

Casper was born May 21, 1993, and was a staple in the Kiel community through wrestling, soccer and coaching youth sports. After graduating from Kiel High School in 2011, he attended Lakeshore Technical College and graduated with a degree in criminal justice in 2014. He was active in the Color Guard and held the position of president of the LTC student government.
