Kiely Rodni - live: Mother speaks out as search for missing Truckee teen is scaled back

·28 min read

Kiely Rodni’s mother has spoken out after investigators announced that they are scaling back the search to find her missing daughter.

Lindsey Rodni-Nieman told The Independent on Tuesday that she “understands the reasons” behind the search moving into a “more limited” phase but vowed to “never give up hope” that she will find the 16-year-old.

Kiely was last seen at around 12.30am on 6 August at a party – attended by around 200 to 300 teens and young adults – at the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, California.

Her cellphone last pinged next to Prosser Lake around that time and has not been in service since. Police have released images of two sweatshirts associated with Kiely – the first which she was leant and another which she was spotted on video wearing at the campground party.

Now 12 days on, officials said the case will transition into a more “background, investigative” phase next week.

Ms Rodni-Nieman urged people to continue to come forward with any information. “There’s no photo that’s too small, no piece of information too mundane,” she said.

Kiely Rodni’s mother says she’ll ‘never give up hope’ of finding daughter

Kiely Rodni’s mother has said she will “never give up hope” of finding her daughter as investigators scale back the search for the missing teenager.

Lindsey Rodni-Nieman spoke to The Independent on Tuesday on what marked the 11th day since the 16-year-old vanished without a trace from a party at the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, California.

“I don’t think I will ever give up hope that she’ll come back safely back to us,” she said.

“The mind reels. That doesn’t stop. But I do have people coming forward and sharing stories of their loved ones who went missing and then came back days, weeks and months later.”

Woman and ex-boyfriend disappeared one day after Kiely Rodni

14:00 , Rachel Sharp

A California woman and her ex-boyfriend went missing on 7 August – one day after Kiely Rodni vanished without a trace just 35 miles away.

Janette “JJ” Pantoja, 29, and Juan Almanza Zavala, 36, remained friends after they broke up and had gone to the Hot August Nights car show in Reno, Nevada, together on the night of 6 August.

Ms Pantoja’s sister Alejandra Pantoja told Fox News Digital that her sister texted her current boyfriend at around 11pm to say that she would be home in around 30 minutes.

When she failed to return home, the boyfriend received an alert on his phone that she had stopped sharing her cellphone location data, she said.

The pair have not been seen since.

Like Kiely, Mr Zavala’s vehicle – a blue 2002 Ford Explorer SUV with licence plate 4SNS072 – is also still missing.

In another bizarre link to the disappearance of the missing teen, Kiely’s mother Lindsey Rodni-Nieman previously told The Independent that her daughter was planning to go to the car show with her the night she vanished.

Instead, she decided to go to the campground party and has been missing ever since.

Ms Rodni-Nieman said that her daughter had already gone to the car show in Reno – just over the border with California – earlier in the week.

Truckee police to scale back search for missing teen

13:00 , Rachel Sharp

Investigators are planning to scale back the search for missing teenager Kiely Rodni as 11 days have gone by since she was last seen at a campground party in Truckee, California – and there is still no sign of the 16-year-old or her missing car.

Captain Sam Brown of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press conference on Monday that the search will move to a “limited” phase next week.

“We are moving into a more limited but continuous search and rescue effort, we’ve pulled in a tonne of resources towards that goal and to date we’ve had over 9,000 man hours into searching, which is pretty astronomical,” he said.

“Our biggest problem is where do we go and how do we keep sustaining this. We do have some plans that have continued… but we are going to have to switch modes and kind of focus on the investigative end and try to figure out where we do we go from there?”

No air or dive teams now on case

07:00 , Rachel Sharp

Investigators appear to have already started scaling back the search for missing teen Kiely Rodni, with no air resources or marine/dive teams now on the case.

In total, 102 law enforcement personnel were assigned to the case on Tuesday – less than half the 207 who were working on the case just one day earlier.

On Monday, two air resources were also working on the case while over the weekend two dive teams were also combing through the nearby waterways.

The apparent calling off of dive teams comes despite Kiely’s cellphone last pinging at around 12.30am close to Prosser Lake – the constructed reservoir that goes around the Prosser Family Campground. Divers searched the lake for any signs of the missing 16-year-old but recovered nothing but officials admitted that the search was challenging due to the conditions in the water and it having a depth up to 57 feet in places.

Kiely’s mother reveals she almost didn’t go to camp party

05:00 , Rachel Sharp

Kiely’s mother has revealed that her daughter almost didn’t go to the campground party the night she disappeared as she issued a gut-wrenching plea to local teenagers to help “piece together” what happened.

Lindsey Rodni-Nieman spoke to The Independent on Thursday as the search for her missing 16-year-old daughter entered its fifth day and investigators are no closer to getting answers as to her whereabouts.

She said that Kiely had planned to go to a car show in Reno with her mother on Friday night but texted her during the day to say that she was going to go to a party at the Prosser Family Campground instead.

Ms Rodni-Nieman said she wishes Kiely had never gone to the party that night and had joined her at the car show that night. But she said thinking like that is “not helpful”.

Police find new video of Kiely Rodni wearing ‘odd future’ sweatshirt on night she vanished

Tuesday 16 August 2022 23:00 , Rachel Sharp

Kiely Rodni was wearing a sweatshirt with the words “odd future” emblazoned across it on the night she vanished without a trace at a campground party, according to police.

Placer County Sheriff’s Office revealed on Sunday that the 16-year-old was spotted in video footage on the evening of 5 August at the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, California.

In the footage, she is wearing the white hoodie covered in the phrase “odd future” in pink letters.

It is unclear whether Kiely was wearing or in possession of the sweatshirt when she was last seen at around 12.30am the following morning.

However, this is the second sweatshirt the public has been alerted about in connection to the missing teenager after investigators previously revealed that she had borrowed a hoodie with the Lana Del Ray lyrics “you don’t want to be forgotten, you just want to disappear” from someone at the party.

Last cellphone ping places Kiely Rodni near lake on night she vanished

Tuesday 16 August 2022 22:00 , Rachel Sharp

The last ping from Kiely Rodni’s cellphone has placed the missing teenager at the edge of a lake at the campground where she was last seen more than one week ago.

Captain Sam Brown of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office revealed at a press conference on Sunday that the last known location from Kiely’s cellphone was at around 12.30am close to Prosser Lake – the constructed reservoir that goes around the Prosser Family Campground.

He said that it is difficult to get an “exact pinpoint” for the cellphone location data and that it is also possible that the cellphone did continue to ping after that time.

“Just because it was last pinged there, that doesn’t mean that’s where the phone stopped pinging,” he said.

“The ping for the data points was near the water. It’s hard to tell an exact pinpoint.”

Divers have been searching the lake for any signs of the missing 16-year-old but have recovered nothing to date.

No press conference or community meeting today

Tuesday 16 August 2022 20:00 , Rachel Sharp

Officials will not be holding a press conference or a community meeting on Tuesday – in another sign that investigators appear to be winding down the case and have no new information about the whereabouts of Kiely Rodni 11 days on from her disappearance.

“Today is day eleven of the investigation for 16-year-old Kiely Rodni. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada County Sheriff’s Office continue to deploy numerous resources to locate Kiely and her vehicle,” Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Kiely was reported missing on August 6th, after she attended a party with 200-300 juveniles and young adults at the Prosser Family Campground, in Nevada County.

“The Placer County Sheriff’s Office is leading a task force of detectives from local, state, and federal agencies – today, they continue to follow up on leads and conduct interviews.”

Kiely Rodni’s mother says ‘nothing out of the ordinary’ on day she vanished

Tuesday 16 August 2022 18:30 , Rachel Sharp

Kiely Rodni’s mother Lindsey Rodni-Nieman said that there was “nothing out of the ordinary” with Kiely on the day she vanished without a trace.

Ms Rodni-Nieman told The Independent last week that she last saw Kiely on Friday morning and then spoke to her by text message that night – not long before her last known sighting.

It was just like any normal day. Kiely had come downstairs in their home that morning and mother and daughter chatted about their plans for the day.

“It was ‘morning, hi, love you’ and talking about plans for the day – just a little check-in as normal,” said Ms Rodni-Nieman.

“She was going to see some friends and maybe go to the gym… We also talked about her plans to go camping the following night. And then we said ‘have a great day and love you’.”

She said: “She did not seem out of the ordinary at all. Everything seemed the same, she had a big smile on her face and she was ready to greet the day. She was having a good day and week and was excited about going camping the following night. We had a great exchange.”

The mother and daughter stayed in contact throughout the day and last spoke at around 11.30pm that night when Kiely texted to say she would be setting off on the 25-30 minute drive home from the party.

“She said she’d be leaving at 12.15 and was going to start heading home,” said Ms Rodni-Nieman.

That was the last time she heard from her daughter.

New footage found of Kiely at the party

Tuesday 16 August 2022 17:30 , Rachel Sharp

On Sunday, Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced that investigators had uncovered footage of the 16-year-old at the party on the evening of 5 August.

In the footage, she is wearing a white hoodie covered in the phrase “odd future” in pink letters.

It is unclear if Kiely was still wearing or in possession of the sweatshirt when she went missing but officials are sharing the image in the hope that it could jog the memories of other partygoers.

This is the second sweatshirt the public has been alerted about in connection to the missing teenager.

Kiely also borrowed a dark hoodie with the Lana Del Rey lyrics “you don’t want to be forgotten, you just want to disappear” from someone at the party.

Placer County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Angela Musallam confirmed on Monday that they did not have footage or video of Kiely in the dark hoodie but believed she was in possession of it “at some point during that evening”.

Most partygoers have been ‘very cooperative'

Tuesday 16 August 2022 16:30 , Rachel Sharp

Placer County Sheriff’s Office Lt Josh Barnhart said at Monday’s press conference that most partygoers had been “very cooperative” with the investigation into Kiely’s disappearance.

Last week, officials revealed that they had received reports of some adults advising teenagers not to speak up or come forward with the information that could help track down the missing teenager.

On Monday, authorities said that they had not received any more reports of such activity.

“For the most part everyone has been very cooperative,” said Lt Barnhart.

“We haven’t run into very large roadblocks of people not giving information.”

For the past 11 days, investigators and Kiely’s family members have begged teenagers and young adults who attended the party to come forward with any information no matter how big or small.

Police have repeatedly said that they are not interested in investigating teenage drinking or partying but just want to bring the 16-year-old home.

Over 1,100 tips have been received from the public but there is still no sign of the missing teen.

Video of Kiely at the party not being released

Tuesday 16 August 2022 16:00 , Rachel Sharp

Video footage capturing Kiely Rodni at the teenage party at Prosser Family Campground will not be released to the public.

On Sunday, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced that investigators had uncovered footage of the 16-year-old at the party on the evening of 5 August.

In the footage, she is wearing a white hoodie covered in the phrase “odd future” in pink letters.

A photo of the hoodie was released with officials hoping that it jogs the memory of other partygoers who may have seen Kiely at the party.

It is unclear if Kiely was still wearing or in possession of the sweatshirt when she went missing.

Placer County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Angela Musallam said on Monday that the footage and image will not be released at the moment because officials don’t want to “compromise the investigation”. It is not clear what else the footage shows.

Investigators will ‘put pedal down’ on case for one more week

Tuesday 16 August 2022 15:30 , Rachel Sharp

Placer County Sheriff’s Office Lt Josh Barnhart said that investigators would be “putting the pedal down” for one more week before the case becomes more “taskforce style” next week.

“I’d like to say that we’re putting the pedal down, that we are continuing to work this week, and that after this week we will be modifying things to a taskforce style,” he said.

“That means our resources will continue to move forward, but in somewhat of a different manner.”

Lead investigators from each agency will then move forward as one unified command.

“It doesn’t mean the investigation will stop. It will contninue to move forward,” he said.

Police confirm Kiely was learnt black sweatshirt

Tuesday 16 August 2022 14:00 , Gino Spocchia

“We did received a video showing Kiely wearing the white sweatshirt,” Ms Musallam said to reporters.

“To clear up any confusion, that same day Kiely was loaned that black sweatshirt. We never detailed or said she was wearing the black sweatshirt, we believe Kiely was in possession of the black sweatshirt at some point during that evening”.

Search for Kiely entering ‘more limited’ phase, official says

Tuesday 16 August 2022 13:00 , Gino Spocchia

Cpt Brown said investigators “are moving into a more limited but continuous search and rescue effort” and that eventually, “we are going to have to switch modes and kind of focus on the investigative end” as the investigation hit the 10 day marker.

“We’ve pulled in a tonne of resources towards that goal and to date we’ve had over 9,000 man hours into searching, which is pretty astronomical,” he explained. “Our biggest problem is where do we go and how do we keep sustaining this?”
