Kiesel breaks lifting records; S.C. girls win Danville meet

Feb. 22—DANVILLE — The South Central High School girls powerlifting team won the 17-team Danville powerlifting meet held on Feb. 18.

More than 330 athletes across the 17 schools were represented in the meet. The Trojan girls totaled 5,045 pounds to finish ahead of West Muskingum (4,770) and host Danville (4,090).

The Danville meet is broken down by weight class and grade.

Kaylee Richards won the 115-pound weight class for grades 11-12 by totaling 535 pounds. She also won the squat with 215 pounds, and the deadlift at 230 pounds. Richards also won the top lightweight lifter award for the girls meet with a BMI of 4.65.

Emalee Richards won the 125-pound class for grades 11-12 by placing first in the deadlift (215) and squat (200), with a total of 495 pounds.

At 145 pounds (grade 9-10), Jayla Tolliver won the deadlift with a new meet record of 310 pounds. She also did 105 in the bench and 225 in the squat for a 640-pound total.

Lauren Ingram was first at 135 pounds (grades 9-10) with a deadlift of 255 and a 560-pound total. Alexis Doughty (125 pounds, grades 9-10) was first at 450 pounds; as was Autumn Fry (165, 9-10) in with 575 pounds.

In the unlimited weight class for grades 9-10, Jenna Shepherd won the squat (310) and placed first overall with 750 pounds.

Earning second place for the S.C. girls included Taylor Snyder (115, 11-12), Roxanne Wilson (135, 9-10) and Maya Cervantes (unlimited, 11-12).

At 125 pounds in junior high, Kennedy Wagner was first (400 pounds) and Ivy Doughty (355) was second. Makenzie Doughty (unlimited, 11-12) was third; Izzy Lucha (unlimited, 9-10) was fourth; and Alex Kooken (135, 9-10) was fifth.

Meanwhile, the boys team placed fifth overall among 14 schools with 10,355 total pounds.

Standout Braden Kiesel again had a huge showing for the Trojans.

Competing in the 185-pound class for grades 11-12, he won the deadlift with a new school record of 520 pounds. His bench total was 275, while he broke the meet and school record in the squat with a lift of 545 pounds.

In the process, Kiesel broke a 29-year old meet record at Danville with 1,340 pounds — which easily surpassed the original mark of 1,270 pounds that had stood for three decades. The 1,340 pounds is also a new South Central record.

For his efforts, Kiesel won the Best Lifter award with a 7.44 BMI.

Also for the Trojans, Drew Alto (145, 9-10), Leo Kozlowski (145, 11-12) and Gage Lauderman (175, 11-12) each placed third. Carson Buurma (135, 9-10) and Derick Murray (225, 11-12) were fourth, while Lawson Vanderpool (155, 9-10), Sam Bowers (185, 11-12) and Landon Gamble (195, 9-10) each finished sixth.
