Killing of Woman by Her Father Sparks Women's Rights Protests In Jordan

Jordanians gathered in front of the country’s parliament in Amman on July 22 to protest violence against women following the killing of a 30-year-old woman by her father last week.

A video of a woman crying for help that social media users associated with last week’s incident went viral, sparking women’s rights protests as well as a social media outcry with the hashtag “the screams of Ahlam” – the name of the victim – trending.

According to reports, the father of the victim drank tea next to her dead body after killing her. He was tried and charged with murder last Saturday by the Grand Criminal Court in Amman.

After the incident, Princess Basma Bint Talal wrote on her Facebook page that a “radical shift in approach at all levels needs to signal the fact that conditions for violence, domestic or otherwise, will no longer be tolerated.”
