Kim Kardashian And Emily Ratajkowski Shut Down Body-Shamers With Another Naked Selfie

A couple of weeks ago, Kim Kardashian found herself with nothing to wear. Gah, what’s a girl to do? Take a naked selfie of course, well if you’re KK anyway. Fast forward a few weeks and our Kim finds herself with the exact same wardrobe predicament. This time though she’s been joined by actress and model of Blurred Lines fame, Emily Ratajkowski. And with both in the same clothing crisis, what else can they do but post a starkers selfie…together. Cue the internet breaking for the second time in a little over two weeks.

But before you roll your eyes, tsk and dismiss the move as double dose of attention seeking, there is actually an important reason behind the pair teaming up. No, seriously.

Rewind to Kim’s original naked post for a minute. Though Kim was slammed by many for the shot - step forward Bette Midler, Chloe Grace Moretz et al – others saw the selfie as a way to open up a discussion about female empowerment and body politics. And Emily was one such supporter.

Taking to her own social media channels, the Gone Girl actress posted a topless selfie, covering her breasts with one arm, captioning it “What to wear tonight?” in a nod to Kim’s original post.

Whether Kim was just grateful for the support or the pair wanted to keep the body empowerment conversation going, they decided to team up and pose sans bra with those familiar black boxes protecting their modesty.

Following a similar theme to her original naked photo, Kim captioned the selfie, “When we’re like…we both have nothing to wear LOL”. But when Emily posted the same shot to her own Instagram and Twitter, the caption attached seemed to indicate Emily’s reasons for taking up the double selfie challenge were entirely serious.

“However sexual our bodies may be, we need to have the freedom as women to choose when & how we express our sexuality,” she wrote.

“We are more than just our bodies, but that doesn’t mean we have to be shamed for them or our sexuality. #liberated”

“Even if being sexualized by society’s gaze is demeaning, there must be a space where women can still be sexual when they choose to be.”

The 24-year-old actress has previously spoken out about the importance of female empowerment. She recently penned an essay for Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter in which she talked about her struggles with body image growing up. “The implication is that to be sexual is to be trashy because being sexy means playing into men’s desires,” she wrote. “To me, ‘sexy’ is a kind of beauty, a kind of self-expression, one that is to be celebrated, one that is wonderfully female.”

Of course this latest naked selfie, which has been liked 1.2million times and counting, will no doubt stir up a whole new wave of haters. Indeed Piers Morgan has already dismissed the move as ‘trashy’, claiming it to be the final nail in the coffin of feminism. Possibly a little of an exaggeration Piers.

Whether you think the 35-year-old mother of two should just put it away or you’re team KEm and think that women should be able to celebrate their bodies in whichever way they choose, you can’t deny the two women have gone a long way in raising the body positivity profile once again. And that’s surely a good thing. No?
