A recent episode of "The Kardashians" on the Hulu streaming platform has brought renewed attention to the case of Julius Jones, an Oklahoma inmate formerly on death row.

Jones was set to receive the death penalty after being convicted of the 1999 murder of Edmond businessman Paul Howell, but Jones has long maintained he did not commit the crime. A high-profile campaign advocating for Jones to receive mercy drew worldwide attention, documentary focus and major celebrity support, including from famed television personality Kim Kardashian.

After two decades, Jones had exhausted his appeals but Oklahoma's parole board members recommended clemency be granted to him. Gov. Kevin Stitt, however, ultimately had the final say, and he announced on Nov. 18 his last-minute decision to spare Jones' life.

Six months later, the story of Jones, Kardashian and how their paths crossed on the touchstone issue of criminal justice reform is still being told. Here's what we know:

Episode 6, titled "This is a Life or Death Situation," from the first season of "The Kardashians," premiered Thursday on Hulu. The series is a spiritual successor to the long-running reality television series "Keeping up with the Kardashians," on E!, which closely followed the lives of the wealthy Kardashian-Jenner family.

What is Kim Kardashian's connection to Julius Jones?

The episode opens with Kim Kardashian's emotional struggles in her failure to help save the life of death row inmate Brandon Bernard, whose execution by lethal injection in December 2020 attracted major controversy. She had believed his pleas of innocence, and Bernard's execution compelled Kardashian to advocate for Jones much more assertively, which the rest of the episode features prominently.

"This is why I do what I do, because the system is so broken," Kardashian said. "I think my goal is just sharing the process so that people can see what our system is really like and how inhumane the death penalty really is. I have to fight harder to make sure that this doesn't happen to someone else."

How did Kim Kardashian help Julius Jones?

Kardashian's advocacy included much-publicized tweets detailing Jones' case, a 2020 personal visit with Jones at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, and an organized coalition with death penalty abolitionists and celebrity supporters of Jones as his execution date drew nearer.

Gov. Stitt ultimately commuted Jones' sentence to life without the possibility of parole. Stitt's executive order stipulated that Jones cannot apply for a parole or a pardon for the rest of his life.

Various legal experts and justice reformers are uncertain if Stitt holds such authority, but it is not known if future governors would have any power to release him. Jones' family and defense team continue to advocate his innocence.

Kardashian, meanwhile, sees herself furthering a law career in criminal justice reform. She has lobbied multiple times on the issue, including in the cases of Jones, Bernard and Alice Johnson, who was serving a life sentence for nonviolent drug charges, and the First Step Act of congressional legislation tackling recidivism.

The First Step Act passed in 2018, and Johnson was later pardoned by then-President Donald Trump in August 2020. Many credit the latter action directly to Kardashian's lobbying.

A major storyline on both television series was Kardashian's efforts to pass the "baby bar," or the First-Year Law Student's Examination. She has been attempting to become a lawyer by undergoing a four-year apprenticeship, and the new show's sixth episode ends with her discovering she passed the exam on her final chance to take it.
