Kim Kardashian West Mom-Shamed for Letting North Wear Red Lipstick

Naturally, the Internet is freaking out about the fact that the five-year-old wore an upcoming KKW Beauty shade. But was it all part of Kim's plan? 🤔

With the amount of time her mom spends either designing makeup or in the makeup chair herself, it's no surprise that 5-year-old North West already seems to have a penchant for beauty. Kim Kardashian has encouraged her daughter's career as a future makeup artist and/or beauty mogul by letting North do her mom's makeup. But she's also caught some heat from social media critics for letting North try out makeup on herself and straightening North's hair. Now, a few Grinches are here to steal the glam from the Kardashian-West's family Christmas card.

On Wednesday, Kardashian posted a series of photos of the whole West family: Kim, Kanye West, North, Saint and Chicago, standing in front of (fake) snow-covered trees and decked out in their holiday finest. North is posing for her life in an adorable black flapper dress layered over a hoodie. As critics noticed, she's also wearing red lipstick. "Your daughter is how old? Why is she wearing lipstick? Sad," someone tweeted at Kardashian. Another mom offered a more tame if still totally unsolicited take: "My kids, whom were young 10 to 12 yrs old, we're allowed to wear neutral earth tones at home during the holidays. But this red on a 5yr old is tacky & takes away from their beauty."

But in true Kardashian form, North's red lip isn't just a beauty moment. Kardashian hinted on Twitter that the makeup is more than a random red lip — it's a forthcoming product from KKW Beauty. "It just might be a new Classic Red Lip I have launch [sic] VERY soon," Kardashian tweeted. As one fan wrote in response, "WHAT A PLOT TWIST OMG."

As a master media strategist, Kardashian very likely knew that her 5-year-old in a red lipstick would draw attention — and she used it to promote her brand and her bottom line. Hey, no one can say the Kardashians aren't the most prolific lemons-into-lemonade makers.
