STORY: As she sat on a stool at home plate in Miami Marlins Park on Monday (November 16) a message flashed onto the giant jumbotron behind the first woman general manager of a Major League Baseball team, "Welcome Kim Ng".

Thirty years after starting out as an intern for the Chicago White Sox, through assistant general manager stints with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers and nearly a decade at MLB headquarters as senior vice president of baseball operations, Ng finally shattered another of the sport's glass ceilings last Friday by securing the top job with the Marlins.

Overseeing all aspects of the Marlins operation from budgets to player contracts, Ng joins a rebuilding team that were one of MLB's biggest surprise stories this year as they made the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

"First off I want to thank Bruce (Sherman, Owner) and Derrick (Jeeter, CEO) and the entire ownership group for this absolutely wonderful opportunity. It absolutely means the world to me,"Ng said referring to team CEO Derek Jeeter and principal owner Bruce Sherman.

Ng was asked who inspired her and made her "think anything in life is possible."

"As a child I looked up to Billie Jean King was one. As a woman who fought for equality throughout her entire career and is still fighting to this day. And the second one is Martina Navratilova and she for me was somebody who really changed the women's game and how it was played and she changed the idea of what it looked like to be a female athlete so those two were hugely influential in my life," she told reporters on a virtual conference call.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred commended Ng's appointment, which the Marlins said they believed made her the first woman hired as general manager by any of the professional men's teams in the major North American sports.
