Gov. Kim Reynolds has appointed former state auditor Mary Mosiman to lead the state Department of Revenue, the governor's office announced Tuesday.

Mosiman currently serves as the deputy director of the department and the Tax Management Division administrator. She will become the director of the Department of Revenue on Wednesday.

Reynolds called Mosiman "an exceptional public servant" in a Tuesday statement.

"Mary’s leadership of the department’s tax division and her service as co-sponsor of a multi-year tax modernization effort have prepared her well to serve as director of this critical state department," Reynolds said.

Mosiman, a Republican, served as the state auditor from May 2013 to December 2018. She has also worked as the deputy of elections for the secretary of state's office, and as the Story County auditor.

Director to step down, continue leading Iowa's Department of Management

Kraig Paulsen, a Republican and the former speaker of the Iowa House, was appointed director of the Department of Revenue in 2019. He has served concurrently as the interim director of the Department of Management since 2021.

Paulsen will step down at the Department of Revenue, but he will continue to lead the Department of Management, according to Tuesday's news release.

Mosiman was paid $163,732 in fiscal year 2022, according to a database of state salaries. Paulsen received a gross pay of $171,499 in fiscal year 2022 while he served as director of both departments.

Mosiman's appointment comes ahead of a major overhaul of Iowa's state government. The Legislature has passed a bill to combine Iowa's 37 cabinet-level agencies to just 16. Reynolds has yet to sign the bill into law.

The Alcoholic Beverages Division and the Iowa Lottery Authority will become part of the Department of Revenue under the reorganization plan.
