Kimberly, Little Chute finish as top-ranked high school football teams in area

Here's the final edition of the Post-Crescent high school football rankings, separated in large and small school divisions. Teams are ranked on a "pound-for-pound" basis where the team's success is measured in relation to enrollment size.

Large schools (Divisions 1-3)

1. Kimberly (8-1): Papermakers outlast Kaukauna 42-28 in Fox Valley Association season finale. Seth Miron has had a banner year at quarterback, finishing with 1,730 yards and 19 touchdowns. Next: Division 1 playoffs, Friday vs. Fond du Lac.

2. Neenah (8-1): Rockets score 21 points in the fourth quarter to upend Appleton East 35-7. Team boasts pair of 1,000-yard rushers in senior running back Jase Jenkins (1,245 yards) and sophomore quarterback Evan Vanevenhoven (1,013). Next: D1 playoffs, Friday vs. Brookfield East.

3. Menasha (8-1): Bluejays' headline offensive star is quarterback AJ Korth, but starting running back Enock Mulungula has quietly had a solid season (55 rushes, 509 yards, 9.3 average, 9 touchdowns). Next: D3 playoffs, Friday vs. Baraboo.

4. Appleton North (7-2): Lightning defense has given up more than 10 points only twice this season and is allowing an average of 6 points a game through nine contests. Next: D1 playoffs, Friday at Chippewa Falls.

5. Kaukauna (5-4): Ghosts push Kimberly to the limit before eventually falling 42-28 last Friday. Team has the talent to go far in the D2 playoffs, but will need to be road warriors to do so after getting a No. 6 seed. Next: D2 playoffs, Friday at Milwaukee King.

Small schools (Divisions 4-7)

1. Little Chute (9-0): Mustangs earn No. 1 playoff seed with a hard-fought 13-7 victory over Denmark. Running back Drew Joten has surpassed 1,000 yards for the season (158 rushes, 1,002 yards, 10 touchdowns). Next: D4 playoffs, Friday vs. Winneconne.

2. Freedom (8-1): Irish pitch second consecutive shutout with 37-0 victory over Fox Valley Lutheran. Carter Kriewaldt is the team's top offensive weapon (1,176 yards rushing, 16 touchdowns). Next: D4 playoffs, Friday vs. Oconto Falls.

3. Wrightstown (7-2): Tigers beat Luxemburg-Casco 27-15 in regular-season finale. Team's run game has been solid all season, with 2,650 total yards and 27 touchdowns. Next: D4 playoffs, Friday vs. Xavier.

4. Xavier (6-3): Bay Conference champs crack the top 5 for the first time and have won five consecutive games after starting the season 1-3. Next: D4 playoffs, Friday at Wrightstown.

5. St. Mary Catholic (7-0, 8-player): Zephyrs received forfeit win over Williams Bay last Saturday. Team will play final game of the season this week. Next: Friday vs. Wisconsin Heights.
