More Kinder chocolate eggs recalled in Singapore over salmonella fears

UPDATE: More Kinder products have been added to Singapore's ongoing recall.

SINGAPORE — More Kinder chocolate egg products have been recalled in Singapore due to the possible presence of the harmful bacterium salmonella, said the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

SFA on Friday (8 April) said it has extended the recall to three more Kinder products from Belgium: Kinder Mini Eggs (75g), Kinder Egg Hunt Kit (150g), and Kinder Surprise Maxi (100g).

This comes two days after it issued a recall for the three-pack Kinder Surprise product (200g) – also from Belgium – that has a best before date between 11 July and 7 October.

The affected batches of Kinder Mini Eggs and Kinder Egg Hunt Kit have a best before date between 20 April and 21 August. The affected batches of Kinder Surprise Maxi have two best before dates: between 11 July and 21 August as well as between 23 August and 13 September.

Both importers, Redmart and Le Petit, have been directed to recall the affected products in an ongoing effort, said SFA.

Those who have purchased the implicated products should not consume them, it added.

"Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact the importers for enquiries."

The extension of the recall in Singapore comes on the same day that Belgian authorities ordered the closure of a Kinder chocolate factory suspected to be behind a wave of salmonella cases in several countries.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause symptoms including diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps in humans.

Earlier this week, recalls were also made in the UK and several European countries over concerns about products from the factory.

In the UK, at least 63 cases of salmonella, mostly among children aged five and under, have been identified as being linked to some Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs.
