The official invitations for the King’s coronation have been unveiled, with confirmation that Camilla will be crowned queen at the ceremony next month.

On 4 April, Buckingham Palace shared the first look at the ornate invites, which are printed on recycled paper and feature a floral border, and invite attendees to join the “coronation of their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla”.

The use of the royal title marked the first time that the Palace has not used the title “Queen Consort” to refer to Camilla.

Meanwhile, Prince George has been given an official role at King Charles’s coronation. US president Joe Biden has also informed the King that he will be unable to attend the ceremony, but First Lady Jill Biden will be a guest in his place.

The artist behind the invitations, meanwhile, has revealed the fascinating symbolism behind the details in the design.

Prince George will have official role in King Charles’ coronation

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will each have four Pages of Honour supporting them on the day of the coronation, with the monarch’s nine-year-old grandson Prince George expected to take on one of the official roles.

On Tuesday 4 April, Buckingham Palace announced that George, who is second-in-line to the throne and the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, would join three other pages for the King.

As the procession of the King and Queen makes its way through the Nave of Westminster Abbey on 6 May, the pages will hold the robes of some of the leading individuals taking part.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Prince and Princess of Wales said the couple was “very excited and delighted” about George’s upcoming role. “His parents are very excited and delighted that he is a page,” the spokesperson told People. “It’s something that his parents have thought long and hard about and are very much looking forward to - and I’m sure George is, too.”

Sarah Ferguson says royals ‘can’t have it both ways’ if they choose to leave

10:00 , Ellie Muir

The Duchess of York has said that members of the royal family who choose to leave the fold “can’t sit on the fence” and must decide whether they want to be “in or out”.

Her comments come amid ongoing tensions between the royal family and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have repeatedly aired their grievances over Buckingham Palace’s relationship with the tabloid press since they stepped down as senior royals in 2020.

Sarah Ferguson, who was married to the Duke of York until their separation in 1992 and divorce four years later, did not refer directly to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle while talking about her own departure from the royal family.

In a new interview with The Independent, she reflected on her career as an author, having spent 12 years in the US writing children’s books and starring in several reality television shows.

The 63-year-old duchess said: “Well, you can’t have it both ways. You can’t sit on the fence and keep one foot in and one foot out. You’re either in or out.

Queen Consort Camilla will officially be named Queen Camilla at King Charles III’s coronation next month.

The newly-released invitations for the British monarch’s forthcoming coronation revealed Camilla Parker-Bowles’ new title. She was referred to as Queen Consort following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September last year.

The elaborate invitation, which was reportedly sent to 2,000 people, invites guests to attend “The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III & Queen Camilla – By Command of the King the Earl Marshall is directed to invite…to be present at the Abbey Church of Westminster on 6th day of May 2023.”

Sarah Ferguson ‘doesn’t know’ how King Charles is coping ahead of coronation

Tuesday 4 April 2023 18:21 , Ellie Muir

Sarah Ferguson has expressed concern over how King Charles III is coping with his new role as monarch.

In an interview with The Independent, published on Wednesday 5 April, the Duchess of York, 63, shared her thoughts on King Charles’s reign.

“I don’t know how he’s managing. I really don’t,” she said, addressing Charles’s workload ahead of the coronation on 6 May.

“We used to go skiing together,” she said. “And I honestly have no idea how he’s managing with the amount of paperwork and all the overwhelming things he must have to deal with.”

Her comments come after King Charles reportedly asked Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle to vacate their property at Frogmore Cottage and offered it to her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, instead.

What will Queen Consort Camilla wear to the coronation?

Tuesday 4 April 2023 17:29 , Ellie Muir

It is understood that the King will opt for a more modern choice of clothing for the ceremony on 6 May.

Therefore, it is expected that Camilla’s coronation dress will also be more modern compared to previous versions, which tend to include ornate designs and lavish materials.

The last time Britain saw a coronation dress was during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s crowning ceremony in 1953.

She wore a silk satin gown with short sleeves and a full skirt, featuring elaborate embroidery and alternating lines of gold bugle beads, diamantes and pearls. It was designed by Norman Hartness, who merged two of eight designs he presented to the Queen to create her gown.

Here’s everything we know about what Camilla will wear to the coronation below:

The fascinating history behind the throne King Charles will sit on at his coronation

Tuesday 4 April 2023 16:48 , Ellie Muir

King Charles will sit upon the 700-year-old Coronation Chair as he is crowned King at Westminster Abbey on 6 May.

The throne has been at the centre of English coronations since it was made by order of King Edward I between 1300 and 1301.

Westminster Abbey, where it is located, describes the chair as “one of the most precious and famous pieces of furniture in the world”.

With centuries of history behind it, the Coronation Chair is a fragile piece of furniture and is currently undergoing conservation work to ensure it will be in top condition when the ceremony arrives in spring.

Who will be attending King Charles’s coronation?

Tuesday 4 April 2023 15:35 , Ellie Muir

King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will be joined by hundreds of guests at Westminster Abbey, including senior members of the royal family, politicians and celebrities on 6 May.

The Archbishop of Canterbury will conduct the ceremony.

While the venue can seat up to 2,200 guests, it is unknown how many invites Buckingham Palace has sent out, and many attendees won’t be confirmed until the actual day of the event.

There has been controversy in the build-up to the coronation weekend as speculation mounts over whether the Duke and Duchess will be in attendance. In February, a representative for the couple confirmed that they had received email correspondence on behalf of the king, but it’s still uncertain whether they have accepted the invitation.

What will King Charles III wear to the coronation?

Tuesday 4 April 2023 14:40 , Ellie Muir

King Charles III has been advised to wear an outfit for his coronation that goes against previous royal tradition, according to reports.

In previous ceremonies, the King or Queen has traditionally worn silk stockings and breeches. However, recent reports have claimed that King Charles will opt to wear his military uniform instead.

As reported by The Sun, a source said: “Senior aides think breeches look too dated.” When contacted by The Independent, Buckingham Palace declined to comment.

Elsewhere, the coronation will reportedly be a more scaled-down affair compared with previous ceremonies, in an apparent effort to be more “representative of a monarchy in a modern world”.

Will Camilla be crowned Queen at King Charles’ coronation?

Tuesday 4 April 2023 12:01 , Ellie Muir

The title of Queen Consort Camilla, who was previously the Duchess of Cornwall is expected to change following King Charles’ coronation.

Camilla Parker-Bowles, who is Charles’ second wife, was made the Duchess of Cornwall when the pair married in 2005. Upon marrying King Charles in 2005, who was Prince of Wales at the time, Camilla decided not to use the Princess of Wales title, which had been used by his ex-wife Princess Diana.

In an unprecedented move, she became the Queen consort following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September last year, after her husband inherited the throne.

The title was originally known as the “Princess consort” but Queen Elizabeth II announced that it was her “sincere wish” that the Duchess of Cornwall will be known as Queen consort when Charles becomes King.

As the coronation approaches, taking place on Saturday 6 May, Camilla’s title could potentially change while her husband is officially declared and crowned as the monarch.

King Charles stamps go on sale as prices increase

Tuesday 4 April 2023 08:46 , Ellie Muir

Stamps featuring King Charles’s portrait have gone on sale as prices increase.

The cost of a first class stamp, featuring the monarch’s head, went up from 95p to £1.10 on Monday (3 April), while the second class stamp rose by seven pence to 75p.

It comes as a new design featuring the King, who does not wear a crown in the portrait, is now on sale.

The portrait, personally approved by the royal, will be used on regular and non-commemorative postage stamps.

The stamps are unlikely to be seen in regular use for some time since the stock featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II will be sold first.

A sculpture of the monarch, made by artist Martin Jennings, formed the basis for the portrait. It was originally used for the image on the first King Charles coins. The image was then digitally adapted for stamps.

Inside Frogmore Cottage, Harry and Meghan’s former home

Monday 3 April 2023 15:31 , Ellie Muir

The Grade II-listed Frogmore Cottage has been part of the royal family’s property portfolio since the 19th century.

Over the years, various members of the royal family have lived in the 10-bedroom house, which was first built as a retreat for Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, in 1801.

It is currently known for being the first marital home and UK residence of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

However, it was reported at the beginning of the year that King Charles III has “evicted” the couple from Frogmore Cottage and is offering the keys to the Duke of York instead.

When Frogmore Cottage was built, it had 10 bedrooms. However, after Harry and Meghan’s major renovation of the place, it became a five-bedroom property but now includes two orangeries, a vegetable garden and a yoga studio, reports House & Garden.

Meghan Markle’s sister Samantha to refile ‘even stronger’ case against Duchess of Sussex

Monday 3 April 2023 14:49 , Ellie Muir

Meghan Markle’s sister, Samantha Markle, is planning to refile an “even stronger” case against the Duchess of Sussex.

On Friday (31 March), Meghan won a defamation lawsuit filed against her by her half-sister Samantha Markle, 58.

The actor and estranged royal had been accused by her relative of spreading “malicious lies” during a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey and alleged statements to journalists in 2020.

But a Florida judge dismissed the lawsuit, stating that Samantha Markle’s statements were opinion and “not capable of being proved false”.

“As a reasonable listener would understand it, Defendant merely expresses an opinion about her childhood and her relationship with her half-siblings,” wrote US District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell her order.

Samantha filed her lawsuit in March 2022, alleging that Meghan had defamed her by giving information to an unauthorised biography called Finding Freedom and by discussing their relationship with Winfrey on live TV.

According to Judge Honeywell’s order, which was reported earlier by The Daily Beast, Finding Freedom had claimed that Samantha Markle had barely known her half-sister growing up, had “never been close” to her, and had been “handsomely paid” for an unflattering tabloid news story.

Meghan has previously said in interviews that she grew up as an only child.

How the royal family could spend their first Easter without Queen Elizabeth II

Monday 3 April 2023 14:01 , Ellie Muir

Easter Sunday 2023 will be the first that the royal family will spend without Queen Elizabeth II, after her death last September.

The family usually celebrates the religious holiday at Windsor Castle, and will attend a church service on Easter Sunday (9 April) at St George’s Chapel.

The late monarch would also travel to different cathedrals across the country to hand out special coins to individuals in recognition of their contribution to their community and church.

But this year, the royal family will observe their first Easter with King Charles III as monarch instead.

Royal expert and biographer Ingrid Seward believes that it will be a happy celebration instead of a sombre time as they reflect on the years past.

The fascinating history behind the throne King Charles will sit on at his coronation

Monday 3 April 2023 12:03 , Ellie Muir

The Coronation Chair was made by order of King Edward I to enclose the Stone of Scone, which he brought from Scotland to Westminster Abbey in 1296.

The throne, created from oak, was made to contain the Stone between 1300 to 1301. The Stone was originally completely enclosed under the seat of the chair, but the wooden decoration at the front was torn away over time and exposed the Stone.

The Stone of Scone, also known as the Stone of Destiny or the Coronation Stone, is a block of red sandstone. It was previously kept at Scone Abbey in Scotland, which is now a ruin, but was seized by Edward I during the English invasion of Scotland.

Prince Harry ‘stayed at Frogmore Cottage’ during surprise UK visit

Monday 3 April 2023 08:00 , Ellie Muir

Prince Harry reportedly stayed at Frogmore Cottage during his visit to the UK for the phone-hacking case against the publisher of The Daily Mail.

Harry appeared in court at the Royal Courts of Justice on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday last week, alongside other high-profile figures including Sir Elton John.

His visit coincided with King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla’s royal visit to Germany, as preparations for their coronation next month get into full swing.

It is understood that the Duke likely used the visit to sort out the couple’s belongings and work out what needs to be shipped to their Montecito home in the US ahead of vacating the property, The Telegraph reports.

The visit marked the first time the royal had returned to the five-bedroom property after his father told him he would be asked to vacate the property last month.

The King had asked the Sussexes to vacate the property following the release of Harry’s memoir, Spare, at the beginning of the year.

When the eviction was first reported, a royal expert told The Independent that King Charles’s decision cannot be seen as anything other than a reaction to the release of Harry’s memoir.

RS Locke, a freelance writer and royal commentator said: “Evicting the Sussex family from Frogmore Cottage is transparently punitive and King Charles wanted the couple and the public to know it.”
