Royal watchers in Volusia County, as well as worldwide, will be glued to wall-to-wall coverage of the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday in London.

The coronation ceremony for King Charles III and Queen Camilla at London’s Westminster Abbey starts at 6 a.m. ET (or 11 a.m. in London) on Saturday, with live news coverage launching an hour earlier at 5 a.m. ET in the United States.

Here’s what you need to know about the King’s coronation:

What the coronation means to British expats in Volusia County

“It’s a big deal,” said Bob Campbell, 73, a British native who moved to the United States in 1991 and now lives in Holly Hill. “It’s our way of life. When you see things like that on TV, you realize, ‘Oh, that’s where my soul belongs.’ I suppose people here feel the same about New York or something.”

Campbell recalls watching the Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation with his mother on a 7-inch black-and-white TV in 1953. In September, he watched every minute of wall-to-wall news coverage of the Queen’s death and funeral service, a focus that is being repeated with this weekend’s coronation.

“It’s one of those things that’s important,” he said. “That’s the monarch. Ever since I was a child, it has been ‘Her majesty, the queen,” and now it will be ‘His majesty, the king.’ That’s tradition. It’s a part of who I am.”

The coronation ceremony also will be must-see TV for Andrew Hands, the former owner of the Ocean Court Motel in Daytona Beach who left England for the United States in 1987.

At the same time, he thinks that the traditions tied to the process have been affected by the mixed opinions of the British population about King Charles III.

“It’s very important, the tradition, but Charles doesn’t seem to be very popular with the population,” Hands said. “He’s nowhere near as respected as Queen Elizabeth was, that’s obvious. It’s going to be hard to get used to. The queen reigned for so long that you get used to that continuity, so I guess the replacement is always going to get a hard time.”

What's going to happen at the king's coronation ceremony?

The royal ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The service will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry,” according to a news release from Buckingham Palace.

As part of longstanding ritual, Charles will put his hand on the bible and take an oath. He will be anointed with holy oil on his hands, chest and head, in addition to receiving symbolic, bejeweled items that include gold spurs, swords, bracelets, an orb, a ring, a glove, a scepter and a rod.

When the Archbishop places St. Edward’s Crown on the monarch’s head, the congregation will proclaim “God Save the King,” as trumpets blare, abbey bells ring and gun salutes are fired at the Tower of London and elsewhere throughout the United Kingdom.
