Jan. 18—Dalton residents gathered at the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Walnut Avenue on Monday for a wreath laying ceremony in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday.

Pastor Ditria Smith was the speaker.

There were several events in Dalton to honor King, who was a leading figure in the Civil Rights movement. King was born in Atlanta on Jan. 15, 1929, and died after being assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis.

In addition to the wreath laying ceremony, the Dalton-Whitfield NAACP sponsored a day of service on Jan. 14. Volunteers had three opportunities to serve: a cleanup of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard; volunteers could help with renovations of Dalton's Greater Works ministry; and the Mack Gaston Community Center hosted a blanket and sock drive.

The Concerned Clergy of Greater Whitfield County hosted ecumenical services on Sunday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Dalton. Bishop Kevin Adams was be the speaker. The Community Choir offered musical selections.
