King tides to arrive this weekend, rain possible next week, forecasts say

The year's highest tides will hit Ventura County this weekend, according to the National Weather Service, and rain could be on the horizon next week.

The seasonal high tides are known as "king tides," which occur when the moon, Earth and sun come into alignment while the moon is closest to Earth and Earth is closest to the sun, the weather service said.

"This time of year, it's fairly typical for the highest tides of the year," said David Gomberg, a meteorologist with the weather service in Oxnard.

Tides of up to 7.3 feet are expected through Sunday, peaking in the morning between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. A beach hazards warning is in place for the Ventura County coast through Sunday morning to make the public aware of the tidal event.

A "king tide" will bring the year's highest tides to the Ventura County coast this weekend. Shown are waves during a similar event in 2019.

The California King Tides Project is encouraging anyone near the coast to send in photos of high tides as part of its effort to increase understanding of what the state will experience as sea levels rise. More information is available at coastal.ca.gov/kingtides.

In terms of rain, current forecasts indicate a 20% chance for Ventura County starting Thursday, although forecasts may shift in coming days, Gomberg said. The rain would mark the first precipitation to hit Ventura County in weeks.

This week’s update from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows California firmly in the grip of drought. Most of the state is characterized as being in extreme drought, but the area in the worst category — exceptional drought — has decreased over the past three months.

Most of Ventura County remains in exceptional drought, according to the latest map.
